Occupational Hygienist
Casual / project-based exposure assessment work across Canada

Irwin’s Safety delivers a broad range of safety services across Canada, supporting clients in industry, government, and First Nations communities. Our Advisory Services division provides specialized occupational hygiene and exposure assessment services on a project-by-project basis, and we are building a vetted bench of Hygienists to support this work.
This is casual, project-based work best suited for independent occupational hygienists, semi-retired practitioners, or those with flexible availability for multi-day deployments.
Qualifications
- CIH, ROH, ROHT, or CRSP(OH) certification (or recognized equivalent) — ABIH or CRBOH certification preferred for senior assignments
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in an occupational / industrial hygiene capacity
- Demonstrated experience in noise dosimetry, air sampling, heat stress assessment, confined space atmospheric monitoring, respiratory protection program audits, and exposure assessments
- Working knowledge of applicable provincial OHS legislation (WorkSafeBC OHSR, OHS Alberta Code, and other regional regulators) and CSA / AIHA / ACGIH standards
- Competence calibrating and operating sound level meters, dosimeters, photoionization detectors, multi-gas monitors, sampling pumps, and related field instrumentation
- Ability to produce technical exposure assessment reports compliant with provincial OHS requirements
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; ability to travel for multi-day projects
- Ability to pass client-site orientations including drug & alcohol testing and security clearances
- Independent contractor capability — GST/HST registration, WCB / WorkSafe clearance, and current professional liability insurance
Typical Engagements
- Conduct workplace surveys and exposure assessments to identify and characterize chemical, physical, and biological hazards
- Measure and evaluate worker exposures — noise, dust, fumes, vapours, heat stress, ergonomic load, indoor air quality
- Design and execute sampling strategies in accordance with AIHA / NIOSH / CSA methodologies
- Recommend and support implementation of control measures using the hierarchy of controls
- Audit respiratory protection programs and conduct fit testing oversight
- Provide subject-matter input on confined space, hot work, and other high-hazard atmospheric monitoring protocols
- Produce technical reports, exposure registers, and compliance letters for clients and regulators
- Provide information and training to workers, supervisors, and management on identified hazards and controls
Compensation
Day rate or fixed project fee, structured under Irwin’s charge-out rate schedule. Rate band depends on credentials and project scope. Travel, accommodation, and per diems provided on applicable projects.

Irwin’s Safety operates from 20+ offices across Canada. We are actively building occupational hygiene bench capacity in all of the following regions:

Hygienists outside these regions are welcome to apply for project-based travel work.
