Thompson Construction Group has an immediate opening for a Senior Accountant at our Spruce Grove office reporting to the Financial Controller. The Senior Accountant is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely financial transactions, journal entries, reconciliations, and reporting in compliance with accounting standards. This role supports audit, treasury, and general ledger processes while maintaining internal controls and ensuring adherence to company policies. The position requires strong accounting expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple accounting processes independently.
Responsibilities:
Transactional Accounting and Journal Entries:
- Prepare, review, and post daily, weekly, and monthly journal entries accurately
- Ensure proper accounting for accruals, prepayments, intercompany transactions, and expense allocations
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, identifying and resolving discrepancies promptly
- Support month-end and year-end close processes to ensure timely financial reporting
- Manages fixed asset ledgers and capital expenditure reporting
- Support with transactional streams as required
Audit and Compliance:
- Assist in internal and external audits by preparing schedules, supporting documentation, and explanations for account balances
- Ensure compliance with ASPE and/or IFRS accounting standards
- Maintain and enhance internal controls, policies, and procedures to mitigate financial risk
- Prepare audit working papers and respond to auditor inquiries
Treasury and Cash Management:
- Monitor and reconcile bank accounts, ensuring accuracy and proper documentation of cash transactions
- Prepare daily/weekly cash position reports and support cash flow management
Continuous Improvement:
- Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes and enhance the efficiency of transactional workflows
- Assist in the implementation and optimization of ERP system processes and controls
- Provide support for ad hoc accounting projects as required by Finance leadership
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting
- CPA designation or near completion
- Minimum of 4 years of accounting experience with a focus on general ledger, journal entries, audit, and treasury functions
- Strong knowledge of financial statements, reconciliations, and accounting principles (ASPE and/or IFRS)
- Experience with ERP systems and advanced Microsoft Excel skills
