Varsteel Ltd., a full-line steel distribution service centre with operations across Western Canada, is seeking an Operations Shift Supervisor for our Delta branch.
This is a hands-on leadership role in a busy industrial warehouse and yard environment. The successful candidate will supervise employees involved in loading, unloading, material movement, order preparation, crane operations, yard organization, and shipping documentation.
This position is well suited to someone who enjoys being on the floor, leading people directly, solving problems in real time, and keeping a busy operation organized, safe, and productive.
About the Role
Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Operations Shift Supervisor will be responsible for the day-to-day performance of a single shift. This includes directing employees, maintaining work flow, ensuring trucks are loaded properly, supporting safe crane and forklift operations, and making sure orders are completed accurately and on time.
The ideal candidate will bring strong floor leadership, good judgment, a practical understanding of warehouse or industrial operations, and the ability to hold employees accountable in a fair and professional manner.
Key Responsibilities
Supervise warehouse and yard employees during assigned shift.
Coordinate the loading, securing, and tarping of steel products for delivery.
Ensure material is unloaded, stored, tagged, painted, and counted accurately.
Oversee safe crane, forklift, rigging, and material-handling practices.
Assign work to employees and maintain a steady flow of work throughout the shift.
Ensure trucks, orders, and work areas are properly organized.
Monitor productivity, quality, safety, housekeeping, and attendance.
Communicate with sales, shipping, and management regarding order status or service issues.
Complete required paperwork, documentation, and shift communication.
Address employee issues, performance concerns, and workplace conflict when required.
Ensure employees are trained in safe work procedures, equipment use, and company expectations.
Promote and enforce PPE requirements, safe work practices, and company safety policies.
Support equipment inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns.
Perform other operational duties as required.
Qualifications
Previous supervisory, lead hand, foreman, or team-lead experience in a warehouse, yard, manufacturing, logistics, distribution, or industrial environment.
Steel industry experience is considered an asset, but not required.
Experience with cranes, forklifts, rigging, flat-deck loading, or heavy material handling is an asset.
Strong communication and leadership skills.
Comfortable directing employees, setting expectations, and following up.
Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
Practical mechanical aptitude and comfort working around equipment.
Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Excel and Word.
Good math skills for material handling, order checking, and scheduling.
Strong commitment to safety, housekeeping, and quality.
