Summary:
Lead Hand oversees the daily operations of a transload facility, ensuring the safe and efficient transfer of materials between different transportation methods, such as railcars and trucks. This role involves hands-on work and leadership responsibilities, including training staff, enforcing safety procedures, and coordinating tasks.
The Lead Hand will organize, manage and facilitate all standards for quality, safety, equipment maintenance and operation, as well as customer requirements. This opportunity is to foster an atmosphere of continuous improvement in all facets of the yard’s operation in order to achieve 100% customer satisfaction and quality control in the safest, most efficient way possible.
Main Job Responsibilities:
Included but not limited to:
Operating Efficiency and Customer Service (40-50%)
- Adhering to warehouse processes and procedures regarding product transfers, quality assurance, safety and operations as outlined by CN, IBS, and the various shippers.
- Accurately completing all required paperwork and submitting to appropriate management for processing.
- Confirming accuracy of all product transfers and loads under care of the individual.
- Assisting and taking direction from Senior Manager in day-to-day coordination of product transfer operations
- Operation of various vehicles and transfer machines and other equipment operation, equipment and product quality inspections, warehouse opening and closing activities, and general housekeeping.
- The direction and operation of the facility, supplying direct service to the shipping public.
- Collaborate with yard managers to ensure railcars are processed, switching of new cars, personnel, equipment and inventory are in order.
- Provide general assistance and support to management and warehouse personnel wherever required.
- Communicating any and all information to the Terminal Manager including, but not limited to, personnel problems, employee notices and resignations, approaching vacation periods for employees, visits and any incidents.
Safety (25-35%)
- Reporting any maintenance or other potential problems, and any facility and/or equipment damage to the Terminal Manager.
- All areas of the maintenance program, including but not limited to, all maintenance requirements, document control, monthly reporting and communicating all problems and potential problems to the Terminal Manager.
- Ensure safety and well-being of all employees, vendors, drivers and visitors.
- Compliance of all applicable and governmental regulatory standards.
People (10-15%)
- Participate in the training of new employees.
- Assist with performance management yearly reviews, issue warning notices, ensure productivity and minimize loading errors.
- Positive interaction with customers and shippers.
- Completing all required training and certification required of position and responsibilities. All areas of training and documentation, including, but not limited to, safety, environmental, job tasks, maintenance, sanitation and personal professionalism.
Other duties as assigned by the Terminal Manager.
Skills / Functional Knowledge

Education / Certification / Experience
- High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience in an industrial unionized environment is highly preferred.
- 2+ years of supervisory/management experience.
- 2+ years dealing directly with safety-related issues.
- 2+ years of administrative experience.
Working Conditions:
- The role is performed in a combination of office (10%) and outdoor environment (90%) in various types of weather and environmental conditions.
- The incumbent must be available to work shifts and weekends when necessary.
- The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences.
- This role may involve heavy equipment operation.
- Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and manage stress.
