Reporting to the Structural Supervisors (Maintenance) and (Projects), this position is responsible for providing skilled carpentry services related to construction, remodeling, and repair of all University facilities. Instructions may be received verbally or in the form of written work orders.
Two full-time permanent positions are available.
What You’ll Do:
- Operate equipment such as saws, planers, drills, sanders, jointers and wood lathes in constructing and repairing cupboards, shelving, etc.
- Construct walls, ceilings and partitions on remodeling/maintenance jobs, using both wood and metal components.
- Use any of the carpenters’ manual or power hand tools required in constructing, altering or repairing buildings or fixtures.
- Install hinges, locksets, shelf brackets and other building hardware.
- Install floor and ceiling tiles, and install or replace other building fabrics.
- Construct and install millwork as required.
- Assist in providing introductory training to new carpenters or apprentices.
- Supervise an apprentice or a labourer as assigned.
- Inspect University buildings, facilities and hard landscape components for needed servicing and repairs.
- Maintain building interiors and exteriors.
- Prepare framing form-work for concrete placement.
- Mix and pour concrete.
- Set up scaffolding for various trades crews on campus.
- Install and repair wood and metal doors.
- Hang various items such as marker boards, cork-boards, banners, and plaques.
- Create and maintain a safe, clean and neat work environment.
- Respond to emergency calls by assuring prompt resolution of problems.
- Perform work on Capital and Maintenance projects as assigned.
- Repair and install auditorium, gym, lunchroom, stadium seating including benches and bleachers.
- Repair gym equipment such as glass backboards, volleyball equipment, and weight machines.
- Respond to roof leaks by setting up water diversion equipment.

Position Requirements
What You’ll Bring to this Position:
- Successful completion of technical school training in the carpentry trade and certification requirements for a Journeyperson Carpenter.
- Minimum of five years of related experience.
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
- Preference will be given to those individuals with one or more of the following: flat roofing membrane repair, finishing carpentry, maintenance experience.
- Possession of a valid Saskatchewan vehicle driver’s license (Class 5).
Skills That Will Ensure Your Success in the Role:
- Ability to calculate the appropriate amount of materials required for a job.
- Ability to lay out and accurately mark materials for cutting.
- Ability to read and understand drawings, details, and associated specifications.
- Skill in the use of the tools and equipment used in the construction trade.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook). Experience working with an equivalent database system may be considered.
- Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with staff, the general public, external consultants, contractors, and vendors.
- Ability to organize multiple tasks and meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and at considerable heights.
- Ability to understand and comply with University health and safety requirements, Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, and all safe work procedures and practices applicable to the position.
- Ability to properly use safety equipment, machine guards, and safety devices. All personal protective equipment must be used as appropriate.
- Ability to identify and report unsafe acts, workplace hazards, and incidents that result (or could result) in injury, illness, or environmental damage.
- Ability to work and encourage others to work and act safely.
Physical Demands
Physical activity is a primary part of the job. Requires the ability to lift, push or pull objects up to 50 pounds. Work will be performed at heights, in crawl spaces, on rooftops and will include the use of ladders and powered mobile lifts. Work involves exposure to unusual elements such as confined spaces, extreme temperatures, chemicals, hazardous materials, dirt, dust, and/or loud noises. Work environment may involve exposure to potentially hazardous material and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and will include the use of personal protective equipment.
Pay Grade CUPE Phase 5 Salary Range $61,157.20 - $82,577.04 Annually Status Permanent Work Hours
Typically Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (as per Facilities Management)
May be required to work overtime and weekends; may be required to work various shifts. Required to be on the call out schedule for emergency after hour calls.
