Position Overview
VL Energy is seeking a Senior Technical Sales & Applications Engineer – Electrical / Power Systems to support technical sales, customer engagement, project implementation, and ongoing customer support for VL Energy’s emissions monitoring, energy optimization, and industrial AI platforms.
This role is ideal for a technically strong, customer-facing professional with experience in electrical systems, power generation, instrumentation, metering, industrial automation, or energy technology.
The successful candidate will work closely with customers, software teams, data teams, engineering teams, vendors, and consultants to translate customer needs into practical technical solutions. This position will also support proposal development, technical documentation, field integration, troubleshooting, and customer onboarding.
Key Responsibilities
- Support technical sales, customer meetings, product demonstrations, and solution discussions for VL Energy’s ES-PEMS™, ES-OptiEnergy, emissions monitoring, and energy optimization platforms.
- Work with customers to understand technical requirements, site conditions, operating data, pain points, and business objectives.
- Review customer technical information, including single-line diagrams, plot plans, instrument lists, sensor data, metering information, generator specifications, equipment datasheets, and site operating data.
- Provide technical input on electrical systems, power generation, metering, instrumentation, sensors, control hardware, and data acquisition requirements.
- Support the design, testing, calibration, deployment, and troubleshooting of sensors, instrumentation, metering systems, control hardware, and field data acquisition equipment.
- Verify sensor and instrumentation performance to support operational reliability, data accuracy, customer requirements, and compliance needs.
- Coordinate with software, data, engineering, operations, vendors, and project teams to integrate field equipment with VL Energy’s cloud-based and AI-driven platforms.
- Prepare and review technical proposals, customer summaries, implementation plans, solution diagrams, wiring notes, technical memoranda, standard operating procedures, and support documentation.
- Support technical inputs for regulatory and permitting-related work, including equipment specifications, electrical summaries, emissions monitoring information, site layouts, and customer technical documentation.
- Assist with customer onboarding, training, troubleshooting, data review, issue tracking, and ongoing technical support.
- Support field-installed equipment maintenance planning, quality checks, system optimization, and issue resolution.
- Translate technical features into customer value, including cost savings, compliance benefits, operational reliability, emissions reduction, and energy efficiency.
- Where applicable, support engineering review, technical oversight, or professional coordination in accordance with internal practice standards and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Assist with project coordination, customer follow-up, internal action items, and cross-functional problem solving.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- P.Eng. registration with APEGA, or eligibility to register as a P.Eng. in Alberta, is preferred.
- 4–6+ years of relevant experience in electrical systems, power generation, instrumentation, industrial automation, technical sales engineering, field application engineering, customer support, or industrial energy technology.
- Strong understanding of electrical power systems, sensors, instrumentation, metering systems, control systems, data acquisition, signal wiring, calibration, and industrial hardware testing.
- Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, instrument datasheets, control panel drawings, site layouts, generator specifications, and equipment specifications.
- Practical knowledge of power generation, natural gas generators, industrial facilities, oil and gas operations, distributed energy systems, emissions monitoring, or energy management applications.
- Familiarity with industrial electrical safety practices, grounding, protection, metering, field installation requirements, and applicable Canadian electrical standards.
- Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify technical issues, organize information, and coordinate solutions with internal teams, customers, vendors, and consultants.
- Strong customer-facing communication skills with the ability to explain technical topics clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong writing skills for preparing technical proposals, customer updates, technical summaries, documentation, meeting notes, and support records.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and project tracking tools.
- Detail-oriented, proactive, customer-focused, and able to manage multiple technical and customer-facing tasks in a fast-moving environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with PEMS, CEMS, emissions monitoring, energy management systems, SCADA, PLCs, IoT sensors, industrial automation, or environmental compliance systems.
- Experience with natural gas generators, distributed power, cogeneration, microgrids, metering systems, control panels, and field instrumentation.
- Experience supporting industrial software platforms, including onboarding, troubleshooting, user training, data review, reporting, and customer support.
- Exposure to cloud-based monitoring platforms, AI-enabled industrial analytics, data acquisition systems, or digital compliance tools.
- Experience preparing customer-facing materials such as technical proposals, ROI summaries, comparison tables, implementation plans, solution diagrams, and value proposition documents.
- Familiarity with industrial regulatory, permitting, or compliance environments related to power generation, emissions, energy systems, or oil and gas facilities.
- Interest in clean technology, industrial digital transformation, AI-enabled monitoring, sustainability, and energy optimization.
Pay: $20.00-$150.00 per hour
