Role Summary:
Lead day-to-day shop operations and perform hands-on shop work as required. Supervise crews, ensure work meets project specifications and QA/QC standards, coordinate with production planners and site supervisors, and maintain a safe, efficient shop environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise and mentor welders, fitters, and helpers; assign work and monitor productivity.
- Perform hands-on shop work including fitting, tacking, welding (TIG, MIG, Stick), grinding, assembly, and layout duties as required to meet production targets.
- Interpret drawings, welding procedures, and project specifications.
- Plan workflow, material staging, and crew scheduling to meet deadlines.
- Ensure welding quality and compliance with CWB/company welding procedures.
- Perform and/or verify welds and prepare assemblies for RT (radiographic) inspection; ensure shop records and hold points are maintained.
- Conduct quality checks, document non-conformances, and implement corrective actions.
- Operate and oversee shop equipment safely (press brakes, saws, cranes, hoists).
- Maintain a clean, organized shop and enforce safety procedures and PPE use.
- Coordinate equipment maintenance and consumables inventory.
- Train staff on best practices, welding technique, inspection readiness, and safe equipment operation.
Qualifications:
- Red Seal certification (or equivalent journeyperson trade certification) required.
- Extensive structural steel fabrication experience (7–10+ years preferred), including heavy structural assemblies.
- Excellent hands-on welding skills: TIG, MIG, and Stick.
- Proven ability to produce welds that pass RT (radiographic) inspection and to prepare shop records for RT.
- Strong blueprint reading, layout, and dimensioning skills.
- Prior supervisory or foreman experience in a fabrication shop.
- Solid knowledge of welding codes and standards (CSA, CWB; AWS an asset).
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid safety certifications (WHMIS, Fall Protection, First Aid) preferred.
