SMI Automation is a renowned designer and builder of custom automation equipment, custom manufactured machinery and robotics within the transportation, oil and gas, and mining industry.
We offer inclusive solutions for custom manufacturing and processing needs with secondary tooling to support – de-flash, cooling, drilling or routing, punching, assembly, and bonding stations. Our machines are used to assemble and bond large body sub-assemblies for heavy trucks, robotically machined openings in the products, apply adhesive, transfer and assemble components and other complex assemblies, no matter the size.
SMI Automation is currently seeking a results-driven innovative individual to join our team. Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Manager, the successful candidate will be involved with the development of system layouts and design specifications for factory automation solutions, including special purpose machines, fixtures, and gauges.
Job Duties:
- Lead the development and review of mechanical designs, including 3D models, detailed drawings, and assemblies using AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
- Completion of projects; according to established schedules, consistent with specific quality and legislation standards.
- Drive material and component selection to optimize performance, reliability, and cost.
- Consultation with controls engineering and manufacturing divisions during the mechanical design process to design automation solutions, which are built efficiently and perform their intended function safely and reliably.
- Works to continuously improve the methods utilized within the mechanical engineering division, with the goals being enhanced safety, enhanced functionality, and reduced cost.
- Work in a team environment with Sales, Estimating, Project Management, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, and Management to assist in the successful execution of projects.
- Attend internal kick off meetings (line up meetings) for new projects to receive an understanding of the scope of the project.
- Liaison with vendors for technical information and specifications.
- Participate in post project review meetings to compare what was quoted against the completed project.
- Some travelling will be required.
- Hours of work are 7:00am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday and due to the nature of this position extra hours outside of the regular office hours scheduled will be required.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in designing custom automation solutions.
- Strong computer, problem solving, and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
· Ability to work independently, meet goals and tight deadlines.
- Post-secondary education specializing in mechanical design technology with an emphasis on factory automation solutions.
- Proficient using SolidWorks.
- Must have technical knowledge of manufacturing processes and factory automation with the ability to read GD&T blueprints.
- Proficient with pneumatic and servo actuators.
- Experience with Siemens Process Simulate, Robot Master or other types of 3D simulation software would be considered an asset.
