Civil Construction Operator / Environmental Construction Labourer Position Overview
Vitae Environmental Construction Ltd. is seeking a Civil Construction Operator / Environmental Construction Labourer to support a wide range of earthworks, environmental, and infrastructure projects across Southern Alberta and Western Canada.
This role is a hands-on field position requiring equipment operation and physical labour. Candidates must be willing and able to work on the ground when not operating equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate skid steers, excavators, wheel loaders, and associated attachments safely and efficiently
- Perform general civil construction and environmental construction labour as required
- Support earthworks including excavation, grading, backfilling, compaction, and material handling
- Assist with environmental and reclamation construction activities including:
- Streambank stabilization and erosion control
- Riparian and bioengineering works
- Installation of erosion and sediment control measures
- Reclamation and site restoration activities
- Mobilize equipment and materials to job sites using company trucks and trailers
- Complete daily equipment inspections and perform basic on-site maintenance
- Read, interpret, and follow drawings, site plans, and project specifications
- Assist Project Managers and Supervisors with site execution, tracking work progress, and documentation
- Maintain accurate records including timesheets, safety documentation, and daily field reports
- Work as part of a crew on local projects and remote projects requiring overnight stays (LOA and accommodations provided)
- Perform all work in accordance with company safety programs, policies, and industry best practices
Equipment & Assets
- Operate and care for:
- Excavators
- Skid steers
- Wheel loaders
- Attachments such as buckets, grapples, augers, compactors, and grading equipment
- Responsible for safe use and upkeep of trucks, trailers, tools, and jobsite equipment
- Maintain a clean driving record and ability to tow trailers as required
Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all company safety procedures and site-specific safety plans
- Report hazards, near misses, incidents, and unsafe conditions immediately
- Use required PPE at all times
- Participate in safety meetings, orientations, and training
- Operate equipment and tools in a safe and responsible manner
Qualifications & Experience
Required:
- Experience operating skid steers and/or excavators in a construction environment
- Willingness to perform physical labour as part of a crew
- Strong work ethic and ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to work long days and travel when required
- Valid driver’s license
Assets:
- Civil construction, earthworks, or heavy construction experience
- Environmental construction, reclamation, or streambank stabilization experience
- Experience working around waterways, erosion control, or sensitive environments
- Ground Disturbance, First Aid, WHMIS, TDG, CSTS, Fall Protection, or similar safety certifications
- Chainsaw Safety or equipment-specific training
- Ability to read construction drawings and specifications
