The Freebird Market operates a modern, chef-driven production kitchen in Etobicoke. From our 7,500 sq. ft. facility, we produce fresh prepared meals, salads, sandwiches, proteins, sauces, baked goods, and large-scale catering items for cafés, corporate clients, retail customers, and events across the city.
We are a fast-growing company that values teamwork, consistency, professionalism, and a positive kitchen culture. We are currently seeking an experienced and motivated Junior Sous Chef to join our leadership team.
This position is primarily focused on evening and weekend operations and is ideal for a strong culinary professional looking to take the next step in their leadership career.
Position Overview
The Junior Sous Chef is responsible for supporting the Executive Chef and Sous Chef in overseeing kitchen operations, maintaining production standards, and leading team members during evening and weekend shifts.
This role requires a hands-on leader who can work efficiently in a high-volume environment while ensuring food quality, food safety, team accountability, and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise kitchen staff during evening and weekend shifts
- Execute and oversee daily production schedules, prep lists, and catering requirements
- Ensure recipes, portioning, and quality standards are followed consistently
- Train, coach, and support cooks and kitchen team members
- Monitor productivity and maintain a positive, professional kitchen culture
- Assist with inventory management, ordering, and waste control
- Ensure all food safety, sanitation, and HACCP standards are maintained
- Support the execution of large-scale catering and production projects
- Assist with scheduling, delegation of tasks, and shift organization as required
- Act as a leader and point of contact when senior management is not on site
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient kitchen environment
Qualifications
- 3–5+ years of progressive culinary experience in a high-volume restaurant, catering, hotel, or production kitchen
- Previous leadership experience as a Lead Cook, Chef de Partie, Kitchen Supervisor, or Junior Sous Chef
- Strong knowledge of food preparation, production systems, food safety, and kitchen operations
- Experience leading teams and holding staff accountable to standards
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure
- Strong understanding of inventory control, waste reduction, and kitchen efficiency
- Food Handler Certification required or willingness to obtain
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
- Must have open availability for evenings and weekends — this is a requirement of the position
