Summary of the position:
The Sanitation Technician is responsible for cleaning and maintaining industrial equipment and plant areas to ensure compliance with food safety, quality, and sanitation standards. Working closely with the Sanitation Team Leader and cross-functional teams, this role supports daily sanitation activities, equipment upkeep, and production changeovers in a safe, efficient, and timely manner. The position requires adherence to GMP, health and safety regulations, and BRCGS standards while promoting a clean and compliant manufacturing environment.
Your Background:
- Minimum 6 months experience in sanitation within a food manufacturing environment (bakery experience is an asset)
- Familiarity with GMP, food safety standards, and sanitation procedures
- Experience working with industrial cleaning processes and equipment
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment
- Capable of identifying sanitation issues and taking corrective action
- Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities and production needs
- Team-oriented with the ability to collaborate across departments
- Post-secondary education is an asset
Responsibilities:
- Clean and maintain industrial equipment including ovens, conveyors, packaging equipment, and other machinery
- Ensure all electrical components are properly protected prior to cleaning
- Perform sanitation tasks such as drain cleaning, floor cleaning, filter replacement, and overhead cleaning
- Follow SSOPs, GMPs, and BRCGS food safety standards at all times
- Handle and use cleaning chemicals safely according to company and supplier guidelines
- Support production during changeovers and throughout the production schedule
- Identify, report, and respond to sanitation, safety, or equipment issues
- Operate equipment such as scissor lifts to clean overhead and hard-to-reach areas
- Maintain cleanliness standards across all plant areas, including waste and recycling management
- Communicate effectively with team members and cross-functional departments
- Assist in training team members when required
- Follow all health and safety policies, including proper PPE usage
- Support pest control efforts through cleaning and reporting
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Scissor Lift license required
- Working knowledge of GMP, food safety standards, and OHSA regulations
- Ability to follow SOPs, sanitation schedules, and audit requirements
- Physically capable of lifting, bending, and performing repetitive tasks
- Able to work 8–12 hour shifts, including weekends and flexible schedules
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to high sanitation standards
- Ability to multitask and transition between duties efficiently
- Experience with internal and external (BRC) audits is an asset
- Reliable, punctual, and dependable with strong attendance
- Comfortable working in varying environmental conditions (hot, cold, wet, etc.)
- Basic problem-solving skills and proactive approach to issue resolution
