Job Summary
The Pipe Layer is responsible for installing underground piping systems for municipal, commercial, industrial, and residential construction projects. This includes sanitary sewers, storm sewers, watermains, culverts, and drainage systems. The Pipe Layer works closely with equipment operators, labourers, and the site foreman to ensure all work is completed safely, accurately, and in accordance with project specifications and applicable regulations.
Duties
- Install underground piping systems including sanitary, storm, watermain, and drainage pipes.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, grade stakes, and specifications.
- Prepare trenches for pipe installation by checking grade, alignment, and bedding materials.
- Lay, align, and join pipe using approved methods and materials.
- Install manholes, catch basins, valves, hydrants, and related underground infrastructure.
- Verify pipe elevations, line, and grade using lasers, transits, or other surveying equipment.
- Assist with pressure testing, leak testing, and inspections as required.
- Ensure proper installation of bedding, backfill, and compaction around pipe.
- Work safely in and around trenches following trench safety regulations and company policies.
- Communicate effectively with equipment operators to safely guide excavation and backfilling activities.
- Identify and report conflicts with underground utilities or unexpected site conditions.
- Perform daily inspections of tools and equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Assist with general excavation duties as required.
- Comply with all Occupational Health and Safety legislation, company policies, and environmental requirements.
Requirements
- Previous experience as a Pipe Layer in the excavation or civil construction industry.
- Experience installing sanitary sewer, storm sewer, watermain, and related underground infrastructure.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and grade information.
- Familiarity with municipal specifications and underground utility installation standards.
- Knowledge of trenching, shoring, and excavation safety practices.
- Valid driver's licence (DZ licence considered an asset).
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs (23 kg), working in trenches, kneeling, bending, and performing repetitive manual tasks.

Working Conditions
- Outdoor construction sites in all weather conditions.
- Exposure to noise, dust, mud, heavy equipment, and varying terrain.
- Frequent lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in trenches.
- Overtime, weekends, and extended hours may be required during peak construction season.
Pay: From $39.53 per hour
