Hiring Unit: Department of Biology (Professor Nam Sung Moon)
Position Summary:
-
Maintains and manages Drosophila melanogaster stocks, including setting genetic crosses, collecting progeny, and performing routine husbandry.

Prepares and processes Drosophila tissues for downstream analyses.
-
Performs immunofluorescence staining on whole-mount tissues.
-
Conducts whole-mount in situ hybridization experiments.
-
Operates laser-scanning confocal microscopy systems to acquire high-quality fluorescence images.
-
Processes and analyzes confocal images using appropriate image analysis software.
-
Performs RNA isolation from Drosophila tissues.
-
Carries out reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR), including sample preparation, assay setup, and data analysis.

Prepares and analyzes polytene chromosome squashes.
-
Maintains detailed laboratory notebooks and electronic records.
-
Prepares concise weekly written progress reports summarizing experimental results, troubleshooting efforts, and future plans.

Troubleshoots existing experimental procedures and systematically optimize laboratory protocols to improve reproducibility, efficiency, and data quality.

Assists with ordering laboratory supplies and maintaining laboratory organization.

Follows institutional laboratory safety procedures and maintain compliance with applicable regulations.

Participates in laboratory meetings and contribute to discussions of experimental design and data interpretation.
Qualifications:

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Excellent written documentation and scientific communication skills.

Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with laboratory members.

Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to optimize and improve experimental protocols.
Education/Experience:
-
Master's degree in Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.

Experience with the molecular techniques described above.

Hands-on experience working with Drosophila melanogaster.
Location: This position is located in Montreal, Quebec and the work for this position is expected to be performed in Quebec.
Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level # (3) qualifier on a scale of 0-4".
