As demand for our services continues to grow, we are seeking a highly motivated Business Development Manager, Medical Communications to drive new business acquisition while nurturing and expanding strategic client relationships.
Position Summary
This is a revenue-generating, client-facing role responsible for identifying new business opportunities, developing strategic partnerships, and growing key accounts across the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, academic, and life sciences sectors.
The ideal candidate is an energetic, commercially driven relationship-builder who enjoys networking, prospecting, and developing long-term partnerships. They combine strong sales and business development skills with the ability to understand complex scientific and healthcare communication needs.
This role is ideal for candidates coming from medical communications agencies, healthcare marketing agencies, pharmaceutical or biotech sales, life sciences business development, healthcare consulting, scientific publishing, CROs and research organizations, and medical education companies.
Key Responsibilities
New Business Development (Primary Focus)
- Identify, develop, and close new business opportunities within pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, academic, and research organizations.
- Execute proactive outreach strategies through networking, referrals, LinkedIn, email campaigns, cold calling, and industry engagement.
- Build relationships with decision-makers in Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Publications, Regulatory Affairs, Market Access, Commercial Operations, and Scientific Communications.
- Develop and manage a robust pipeline of qualified opportunities and maintain accurate CRM activity tracking.
- Meet or exceed quarterly and annual revenue targets.
- Prepare proposals, statements of work, budgets, and client presentations.
- Lead discovery meetings and consultative sales conversations.
- Negotiate service agreements and support contract execution.
Strategic Account Management
- Serve as a trusted advisor to assigned client accounts and develop long-term relationships with key stakeholders.
- Conduct regular business reviews to identify future opportunities and evolving client needs.
- Ensure high levels of client satisfaction and retention through proactive communication, responsiveness, and service excellence.
- Support contract renewals and recurring revenue opportunities.
- Develop account growth plans focused on increasing wallet share within existing clients.
- Drive upselling and cross-selling opportunities across medical writing, publications, CME/CPD, slide decks, meeting reports, and scientific content services.
Medical Communications Project Leadership
- Partner closely with medical writers, scientific directors, publication specialists, editors, and content developers to ensure successful project delivery.
- Assist with project scoping, planning, budgeting, kick-off meetings, and client onboarding.
- Coordinate communications between clients and internal teams.
- Monitor timelines, deliverables, client approvals, budgets, feedback, and resource needs.
- Support quality assurance processes, client review cycles, version control, and timely resolution of feedback.
- Escalate project risks, scope creep, capacity concerns, and client issues proactively and professionally.
Strategic Partnerships & Industry Networking
- Represent the company at industry conferences, scientific congresses, networking events, and professional association meetings.
- Develop strategic relationships with pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, academic research institutions, healthcare organizations, professional medical societies, and scientific publishers.
- Identify partnership opportunities that increase brand awareness and create new revenue channels.
- Contribute to pitch decks, capabilities presentations, case studies, client proposals, and thought leadership initiatives.
Market Intelligence & Growth Strategy
- Stay informed on trends in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical affairs, scientific publishing, congress activity, and medical communications.
- Analyze market opportunities, competitor offerings, client pain points, and emerging scientific communication needs.
- Collaborate with leadership on revenue growth strategies, market expansion initiatives, new service offerings, pricing, positioning, and forecasting.
Qualifications
Required
- 3+ years of business development, sales, account management, or client-facing experience.
- Proven success generating new business opportunities and managing client relationships.
- Demonstrated ability to achieve or exceed sales targets.
- Experience building and maintaining a sales pipeline and using CRM platforms.
- Strong consultative selling, presentation, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with a small team.
- Bachelor's degree required.
Preferred
- Experience within medical communications, healthcare marketing, scientific publishing, life sciences consulting, CROs, medical education, healthcare technology, or pharmaceutical sales.
- Existing network within pharmaceutical, biotech, healthcare, medical affairs, academic, research, or scientific publishing organizations.
- Understanding of Medical Affairs, publications planning, CME/CPD programs, scientific communications, congress activities, and healthcare professional engagement.
- Advanced degree in life sciences, healthcare, pharmacy, medicine, nursing, or a related discipline.

Base Salary
CAD $75,000 - $95,000
OTE
CAD $100,000- $120,000
Pay: $100,000.00-$120,000.00 per year
