The Department of Applied Disaster and Emergency Studies (ADES) is seeking Contract Academic Staff to teach the course and/or lead the lab section for the course at Brandon University for the 2026 – 2027 academic year.
Winter term: Classes run from January 5 to April 9, 2027, with an exam period following.

Course: Section: A00 Tuesday Slot 13 1:40 pm – 4:30 pm (3 credit hour course)
Laboratory: Section: Z10 Thursday Slot 14 1:40 pm – 4:30 pm (1.5 credit hour laboratory)
Course description: 40:362 Disaster Response Management
This course focuses on the theory and practice of how organizations manage their responses to emergencies and disasters. The use of incident management systems, emergency operation centres and other response techniques are considered from conceptual and practical perspectives. Disaster warning systems, evacuation planning, emergency social services, and related topics are examined. The course includes lab work in which students apply a selection of tools and techniques to become familiar with the roles of community members, government and non-government organizations and the private sector through activities in the Emergency Operations Lab (EOL). 3 class hours per week, and 3 laboratory hours per week, one term.
Course Lecture Applicants:
The course covers the following three 4-week modules. Applicants must indicate which module(s) they are qualified to deliver for 1 credit hour each. Applicants may apply for any or all modules.
- Response Coordination: Incident Management Systems, EOC management, critical infrastructure, psycho-social supports (CISM)
- Emergency Social Services: Evacuation, sheltering and emergency accommodation, ESS, donation/volunteer management
- Communications: Warning systems, crisis communication, interagency relationships, After Action Reports
Qualifications for the Course Lecturer: A Master’s degree in Disaster and Emergency Management or a related discipline is required. Applicants must demonstrate relevant expertise in emergency management. Prior teaching or training experience is considered an asset. A preference will be given to candidates willing to teach in person in Brandon. In your cover letter, please indicate the module(s) (above) you are qualified to teach.

Qualifications for the Lab Instructor: A Bachelor’s degree in Disaster and Emergency Management or a related disciplines is required. Applicants must have relevant expertise in the emergency management profession. A preference will be given to candidates willing to teach in person in Brandon. Successful teaching or training experience is preferred.
