The Role
We're looking for a Design Engineer with 4–6 years of experience who wants variety.
This is a hands-on design seat, but it is not a CAD-only seat. Roughly half your week is design work: modelling, calculating, drawing, defending your numbers in design review. The other half is related to the manufacturing and creation of your and others designs. Shop support working alongside machinists, dispositioning a non-conformance with QC, writing the procedure and recording templates, designing fixtures and supporting Assembly and testing.
If you want to be heads-down in SolidWorks with the door closed, this is not the role. If you like knowing how the whole thing works, and being the person the shop floor comes to, you'll do well here.

What You’ll Do
Design Engineering
- Generate innovative, effective and manufacturable designs of multi-component tool systems that meet or exceed customer specifications.
- Work closely with manufacturing to optimize designs for manufacturability.
- Perform complete engineering and failure analysis, identifying and calculating all limiting parameters including yield, shear, burst, collapse, tensile, torque and load capacity.
- Perform and interpret Finite Element Analysis where the application warrants it.
- Produce 3D models and detailed manufacturing drawings to Norquest engineering standards, drawing protocols and applicable API standards.
- Prepare and defend design inputs, outputs and calculations at Design Review and Design Verification meetings.
- Work within our documented design control and change management processes, including Engineering Change Notices.
Technical support to Manufacturing, Assembly, QC and QA.
- Act as an engineering point of contact for the shop floor, for drawing interpretation, tolerance intent, material questions, machining and welding practicality, and general technical guidance.
- Support Assembly through build issues, fit problems and procedural questions as they arise.
- Work with Quality Control and Quality Assurance to identify, investigate and disposition non-conformances, and to develop and refine inspection criteria.
- Prepare Customer Deviation Approval Forms for customer disposition.
- Investigate root cause for part issues, and close the loop back into the design or the standard.
Checking and verification
- Perform peer reviews and dimensional audits on colleagues’ models and drawings before release.
- Check parts, assemblies and tool systems against drawing and design intent as required.
- Verify calculations, including independent alternate calculations — as part of Design Verification.
- Support first-article and in-process review where a design is new or a tolerance is tight.
Standards, procedures and documentation
- Contribute to the development and improvement of engineering procedures, work instructions and internal standards.
- Help build and maintain Norquest’s drawing and documentation standards, tolerancing conventions, dimensioning practice, title block and note requirements.
- Build assembly procedures for Norquest-designed tools, and review customer assembly procedures for accuracy.
- Construct and review assembly trace and load-out sheets.
- Design testing fixturing.
- Help capture what currently lives in people’s heads and turn it into something the next engineer can use.
Tooling, fixtures and engineering resources
- Design fixtures, gauges, shop aids and test fixtures that make manufacturing and assembly faster, safer and more repeatable.
- Establish safety protocols for component and assembly testing, including safety parameters and fatigue limits for assembly and test fixtures.
- Participate in the testing and qualification of new tools and assemblies.
- Develop and maintain engineering resources, reference material, calculation methods and templates, standard component and design libraries, and engineering indices and databases.
General
- Track billable hours accurately against project files.
- Comply with all HSE, QMS and corporate policies.
What You Bring
Required
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
- P.Eng. registered and in good standing with APEGA, or registered in another Canadian jurisdiction and eligible for transfer to APEGA.
- 4–6 years of design engineering experience in a manufacturing, tooling or equipment environment.
- Strong SolidWorks modelling and drawing capability; working knowledge of AutoCAD is an asset.
- Demonstrated competency performing first-principles engineering calculations and defending your assumptions.
- Practical understanding of how parts are actually made, enough machining and fabrication awareness to know when a drawing is going to cause trouble on the floor.
- Clear written communication; you can write a procedure that someone will actually follow.
- Comfortable being flexible, shifting priorities between design work and floor support, and working to firm deadlines.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
Preferred
- Direct experience with oil and gas tooling, downhole tools, pressure-containing equipment, or completions/drilling hardware.
- Working familiarity with API standards.
- Hands-on FEA experience (SolidWorks Simulation or equivalent) with the judgement to know when analysis is warranted and when it is not.
- Experience as a drawing checker, or in a formal design review / dimensional audit function.
- Experience in QA/QC, non-conformance investigation, or inspection and test planning.
- Experience writing procedures, work instructions or engineering standards.
- Experience working within an ISO 9001 or API Q1 quality management system.
