We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Family Law Lawyer to join our growing team at Prudent law in Mississauga, Ontario. The successful candidate will represent clients in a broad range of family law matters including separation, divorce, child custody, spousal and child support, property division, and domestic contracts. This role requires strong advocacy, negotiation, and client management skills.
There is an opportunity to independently lead and run the Family Law department within the firm in the future. The associate will be given full encouragement and support to bring in files as an additional source of revenue. An ideal candidate will bring in an existing book of business - This is preferred but not mandatory.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice and representation on family law matters including:
- Separation and divorce
- Child custody and access
- Spousal and child support
- Property division and equalization
- Adoption and guardianship
- Domestic contracts (e.g., cohabitation, marriage, separation agreements)
- Draft, review, and negotiate legal documents and agreements.
- Represent clients in Ontario courts and at mediations, arbitrations, and settlement conferences.
- Maintain and manage an independent caseload from intake to resolution.
- Conduct legal research and keep up to date on changes in family law legislation and case law.
- Communicate effectively with clients, opposing counsel, court staff, and other professionals.
- Maintain accurate and organized client files.
Qualifications:
- Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- LL.B. or J.D. from a recognized law school.
- Minimum 5 years of experience practicing family law in Ontario.
- Strong litigation, negotiation, and drafting skills.
- Ability to manage emotionally sensitive and high-conflict situations with empathy and professionalism.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
Assets (Preferred but Not Required):
- Experience with mediation, arbitration, or collaborative family law.
- Fluency in a second language.
- Background in child protection or estate law.
