Overview
The SSHE Lead III provides onsite Safety, Security, Health, and Environmental (SSHE) leadership and technical support to KDP management and project teams. This role ensures compliance with IOL policies, Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) regulations, and client requirements while driving a strong, proactive safety culture across all site activities.
The position is highly dynamic and field-focused, requiring a self-starter who can effectively manage multiple priorities, respond to incidents, and support continuous improvement in safety performance.
Responsibilities
Safety Leadership & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with IOL policies, OHS regulations, and project-specific HSE requirements.
- Support management during orientations, kickoff meetings, and review of Project HSE plans.
- Deliver KDP orientation materials and PSMS training to new personnel.
- Ensure proper execution of medical response plans and follow up with clinics and contractors.
- Engage with regulatory representatives on compliance-related matters.
Field Monitoring & Coaching
- Visit field locations to review pre-task briefings, LSRAs, and JSAs for completeness and effectiveness.
- Monitor drilling and field activities, providing coaching and support to teams and stakeholders.
- Participate in site tours, ride-alongs, inspections, and hazard identification activities.
- Promote continuous improvement through on-site engagement and feedback.
Safety Systems & Reporting
- Perform verifications & validations (V&Vs) and other required entries in the KPA platform.
- Complete at least one structured safety observation daily and document findings.
- Prepare weekly safety reports, including observation tracking and recognition of standout personnel.
- Ensure contractors provide accurate incident reports and corrective actions.
- Track monthly contractor hours worked.
Incident Response & Investigation
- Respond to emergency events and incidents both during and outside regular working hours.
- Conduct and support incident investigations, ensuring thorough analysis and follow-up on action items.
- Prepare internal investigation reports using Imperial SharePoint systems.
- Communicate findings through safety bulletins and newsletters.
- Coordinate closely with clinics and manage injury/illness (IP) cases.
Stakeholder Coordination & Communication
- Build and maintain relationships with Kearl Mine Operations safety advisors and contractor safety teams.
- Maintain ongoing communication with contractor safety leads and provide support when needed.
- Share safety alerts, briefings, and critical information across stakeholders.
- Promote open communication channels with all personnel.
Program Development & Support
- Assist in the development and review of SOPs, SWPs, JSAs, and JHAs.
- Support contractor safety personnel (e.g., SSEs) through monitoring and coaching.
- Manage records for contractor equipment (e.g., rental radios).
- Access and coordinate additional resources through Kearl Projects group as required.
- Provide general support to project needs and operational safety initiatives.
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of SSHE principles, OHS regulations, and industry best practices.
- Experience in safety leadership within industrial, construction, or drilling environments.
- Basic understanding of drilling operations and associated scopes.
- Proven ability to conduct incident investigations and implement corrective actions.
- Strong communication, coaching, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to build relationships across multiple teams and contractors.
- Highly organized with strong reporting and documentation skills.
- Self-starter with the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Willingness to respond to incidents outside regular working hours when required.
