Volker Stevin’s pipelaying crews are responsible for installing underground utilities that support communities and essential infrastructure. Based on experience and qualifications, candidates may be considered for one or more of the following roles:
Topman
Provides grade control and oversight at the surface, working closely with equipment operators and pipelayers to ensure safe, accurate trenching and pipe installation.
Pipelayer
Installs storm, sanitary, and water infrastructure, ensuring pipe is set to proper line and grade and connections meet project specifications.
Pipelayer Helper
Supports pipelaying operations through material handling, site preparation, trench support, and general labour tasks critical to safe and efficient installation.
How You’ll Add Value

Safely perform pipelaying and underground utility installation in accordance with project specifications

Assist with trench preparation, bedding placement, and backfilling activities

Set and install pipe to line, grade, and elevation requirements

Work closely with excavator operators and foremen to maintain safe trench conditions

Install and maintain trench boxes, shoring, and other protective systems

Monitor for hazards and ensure safe access and egress in excavations

Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas

Support and mentor newer crew members where applicable

Actively contribute to Volker Stevin’s safety-first culture
What You Bring
-
2+ years experience in underground utilities or pipelaying (role-dependent)
-
Strong technical knowledge in underground, earthworks, base, or concrete operations
-
Strong understanding of safe work practices related to trenching and excavation
-
Ability to read grades and work with lasers or survey controls (Topman / Pipelayer roles)
-
Willingness to participate in pre-employment Drug & Alcohol Testing
-
Valid Class 5 Operator’s License; with Driver’s Abstract showing no more than 6 demerits
