About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a 92-year-old gentleman living independently in his home in Brampton. He's a charming, social person who had a successful career in business and enjoys spending time at the Legion with friends and his girlfriend. While he presents very well in conversation, he's experiencing short-term memory decline and has lost some stamina following recent hospitalizations, including a fall in November and another recent fall. He's agreed to give up his driver's license next spring, which has prompted the family to explore care options. He sleeps quite a bit, sometimes skips meals (particularly supper), and occasionally misses his evening medications from his dosette pack. His grooming standards have declined slightly, though he remains largely independent with bathing and personal care. He can be resistant to discussing health concerns and tends to downplay pain or illness, so an experienced PSW who can read between the lines will be essential.
Responsibilities:
- Provide friendly visiting and companionship to combat loneliness and add structure to his week
- Light monitoring of overall wellbeing, nutrition, and safety
- Ensure adequate food is in the fridge and assist with light meal prep (reheating, reminders)
- Monitor medication adherence and provide gentle reminders for his dosette pack
- Light housekeeping and tidying
- Accompany him to medical appointments when family cannot attend
- Assist with grocery shopping or errands via taxi (caregiver cannot drive client in personal vehicle)
- Provide memory prompts and gentle redirection as needed
- Watch for signs of illness or decline and report concerns promptly to family and care team
- Complete visit reports after each shift for RPN review
What We're Looking For:
- A PSW who makes clients feel comfortable and at ease
- Someone reliable, consistent, and punctual
- A caregiver who takes initiative and can identify needs proactively
- Experience working with seniors who minimize health concerns or resist help
- Ability to build trust with an independent-minded client
- Strong observational skills to catch subtle changes in condition
- English-speaking
- Comfortable with light cognitive support and memory prompts
- Patient, calm demeanor with positive energy
- Understanding that this is the client's first time receiving care
Schedule:
Flexible schedule to be determined based on client and caregiver availability. Family is considering 2-3 visits per week, with 2-3 hours per visit preferred. The client would benefit from consistent weekly structure with the same caregiver building a relationship over time. Schedule may increase as needs evolve, particularly during winter months when he experiences more chest issues.
