The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory) job performance are:
- Forklift Certification
- Successful completion of Skid Steer Loader Safe Operation Course
- Must have a good driving record as demonstrated by a positive driver’s abstract
- Certificate: Transportation of Dangerous Goods
- License: Class 3 driver’s license with air brake endorsement
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- High School Diploma (Grade 12)
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum 5 years - extensive position-related experience
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- A demonstrated ability to operate a variety of mobile equipment, especially agricultural tractors, skid steers, lawn mowers, garbage and dump trucks.
- Must be willing to work various shifts and irregular hours during emergencies and snow removal operations.
- Must be able to communicate and follow instructions in English (verbal and written).
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- The work environment across the University includes high rise buildings, academic and research facilities with laboratories, libraries, lecture theatres, office spaces, residences for students and recreational space for an active staff and student population of approximately 40,000.
- Industrial spaces also exist for essential campus services including high pressure steam and high voltage electrical distribution, water storm and waste networks, as well as tunnels, confined and restricted access spaces.
- The full ranges of municipal services are delivered across campus including mail, parcel and parts delivery, garbage and recycling pickup, snow removal and roads and grounds maintenance.
- Outdoor spaces are included in the work environment and the inherent climactic conditions include winter and summer temperature variations that range from extreme cold to extreme heat.
- Most work is physically demanding and some work environments present hazards that involve safe work procedures and precautions.
- Must be physically capable of performing the duties as assigned.
- Must be able to pass required FIT assessment and related safety training. Must be able to work in awkward, confined spaces and high locations.
- Must be able to perform related duties as assigned.
OTHER:
- Regular attendance and punctuality is required.
- Will be required to provide acceptable Criminal Record and Vulnerable Persons Registry checks.
- Operates all mobile equipment and vehicles such as seeder, fertilizer applicator, aerator, sidewalk sweeper, steamers, portable pumps, fork lifts and pallet jacks etc. required to complete duties.
- Assists with all aspects of landscaping projects and grounds maintenance as required.
- Hauls and moves materials and waste as required.
- Assists with setups for campus events and in the event of emergencies.
- Assists with repairs to equipment and reports deficiencies to supervisor.
- Installs, replaces and removes signs and posts as required.
- Works closely with numerous groups at the University in order to carry out maintenance requests.
- Performs minor repairs to asphalt, concrete, interlocking bricks and gravel installations.
- Performs the duties of similar or lower classifications or assists other departmental employees as required.
- Performs minor maintenance and repairs on equipment and vehicles such as tire repairs and changing cutting edges.
- Regular lubrication of pivot points and grease nipples.
- Removes, installs, performs non-technical maintenance on parking meters, signs and poles as required.
- Ensures the equipment/vehicle cabs are free of debris and are kept clean.
- Assists with all aspects of snow removal operations.
- Will be required to work with hand tools and power hand tools such as shovels, rakes, back pack blowers.
- Washes and cleans interior and exterior of equipment as required.
- Assists with coordination of Campus Beautification Day activities.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
