The Department of Grounds and Roads within the Facilities Management is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Heavy Equipment Technician.
Operations and Maintenance (O&M), Grounds unit is responsible for the maintenance of the University campuses outdoor environment, including hard and soft landscaping activities. These activities typically range from; snow removal from roads, parking lots and sidewalks, grass cutting and trimming, irrigation system operation including maintenance and repairs, solid waste and recycling collection, road surface repairs and construction.
This position reports to the Supervisor and Lead Hands. Work is performed under direct supervision.
Hours of work are 37.5 hours per week, 5 days per week. Overtime is not normally required, however, in case of emergency or snow removal operations, it may be authorized by the supervisor or lead hands. Call-in would be made on an as-needed basis. This position is a part of the AUPE Collective Bargaining Unit.
This position requires maintenance and repair work to be carried out on all grounds mobile and stationary equipment. This position is expected to use tools and equipment that requires minimal instruction to operate such as air tools, welder, lift hoist, variety of hand tools.
The heavy duty technician is responsible to maintain mobile and stationary equipment in a safe and effective manner. Providing these services in an effective and efficient manner will ensure the reliability, access and safety of the mobile and stationary equipment. This equipment is critical to maintaining the campus and to the health, safety and wellness of students, visitors, faculty and staff.
Primary Purpose of the Position (key purpose, functions, roles):
Under direct supervision performs maintenance and repairs to mobile and stationary equipment in order to ensure that the equipment is available, reliable and safe to operate.
Main Activities:

Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on mobile and stationary equipment including front end loaders, grader, backhoe, medium duty trucks, mowers, trimmers, and attachments using the ARCHIBUS Maintenance Management System.

Perform repairs to mobile and stationary equipment.

Inspect mobile and stationary equipment for defects or required repairs.
-
Supervise others involved in maintenance tasks.
-
Advise the Supervisors of required major repairs or replacements to mobile and stationary equipment.

Maintain safe working conditions and adhere to occupational health and safety regulations.
-
Perform other related duties as required.
Assist with administrative duties:
-
Assist in the preparation of capital budget submission.
-
Assist in preparing preventative and predictive maintenance schedules.
-
Maintain inventory control over equipment and supplies.
-
Assist in ordering replacement equipment, parts and supplies.
-
Maintain maintenance and repairs logs and records.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Ensures the work assigned is completed as required and is in compliance with the University specifications, standards and procedures.

Responsible to become familiar with all existing University structures and systems, as well as acquire knowledge of new trends, techniques, codes and equipment as they become relevant to the operation of the University.

Ensures that equipment, workspaces, and tools supplied by the University are used for their intended purposes, are maintained in a safe working order, and operated according to all required safety regulations and procedures.

Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate supervisor is kept informed of activities, and progress of work.

Pleasantly and respectfully interacts with co-workers, supervisors, contractors, consultants, suppliers, students and other members of the University community.

Ensures that personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn at all times when on the job.

Familiar with the University of Calgary "Statement on Principles of Conduct" and conducts himself/herself according to these principles in all situations when acting on behalf of the University of Calgary.

Ensures regular work attendance and timely reporting for start of shift.

Ensures personal hygiene, attire and grooming are appropriate for the work environment.

Qualifications / Requirements:
-
Completion of a recognized Heavy Equipment Technician - Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic (Off Road) Journeyman Certification Program.
The incumbent must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:

Sound mechanical knowledge.

Knowledge of procedures for the repair and maintenance of a wide range of mobile and stationary equipment.

Knowledge of mobile and stationary preventative and predictive maintenance schedules and programs.

Knowledge of when to contact other tradespersons or professionals to complete a task or repair.

Knowledge of equipment inspection procedures.

Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures.

Knowledge of record keeping system.

Must have and maintain a valid Class 5 Alberta driver's license with less than 7 demerits (graduated and probationary licenses are not permitted). A valid Class 3 Alberta driver's license with air brake endorsement with less than 7 demerits would be preferred. A driver's abstract will be required at time of hiring. A valid Alberta driver's license (graduated and probationary licenses are not permitted) will need to be shown at the time of interview.
A valid first-aid certificate would be an asset.
