About Makami
Makami Engineering Group is a growing multidisciplinary engineering firm providing engineering, design, inspection, and technical services to clients across the mining, pulp & paper, steel, utilities, and heavy industrial sectors.
We're currently looking for an experienced Project Engineer to join our team in support of a major Front-End Engineering and Design (FEL 3) study for a large industrial client in Espanola.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys taking ownership of projects, working directly with clients, and developing practical engineering solutions from concept through a completed FEL package.
Overview
We're looking for someone who can independently take ownership of a work package from the initial site investigation through to a completed FEL 3 deliverable.
You'll work directly with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, vendors, contractors, and our internal team to develop project scopes, coordinate investigations, obtain pricing, identify project risks, and develop practical execution strategies.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working with incomplete information, making sound engineering decisions, documenting assumptions, and keeping projects moving forward with minimal supervision.
Duties
- Develop and mature project scopes with Operations, Maintenance and Engineering teams.
- Perform site investigations and identify scope gaps, technical risks and opportunities.
- Coordinate vendors, contractors and specialist engineering support.
- Prepare technical work scopes, RFQs and RFPs.
- Review vendor quotations and identify gaps or inconsistencies.
- Support development of FEL cost estimates, execution strategies and project budgets.
- Develop practical execution plans, work packages and preliminary construction sequencing.
- Document engineering assumptions and recommendations.
- Build strong working relationships with clients, vendors and project stakeholders.
- Manage multiple work packages while maintaining steady progress.
- Produce high-quality deliverables with minimal direction and review.
Required Qualifications
- Engineering degree from an accredited university.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligible for registration.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in industrial engineering or industrial capital projects.
- Experience with projects from FEL through construction and commissioning.
- Strong understanding of industrial construction and project execution.
- Experience coordinating vendors and contractors.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work primarily on-site in Espanola for the duration of the FEL study.
Preferred Qualifications
- Pulp & Paper experience.
- Mining or other heavy industrial experience.
- Mechanical, Process or Project Engineering background.
- Experience developing FEL studies and Class 3 / Class 2 cost estimates.
- Project Management experience is considered an asset.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who takes ownership.
Someone who doesn't wait to be told every step, but instead identifies what needs to be done and moves the work forward.
You should be comfortable making engineering decisions when information isn't perfect, documenting your assumptions, coordinating vendors and investigations, and bringing practical recommendations—not just questions.
Our goal is to find someone who reduces the Project Manager's workload by independently advancing projects while maintaining a high standard of quality.
Why Join Makami?
At Makami, you'll work on challenging industrial projects alongside an experienced multidisciplinary team that values practical engineering, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
We're building a company where people are trusted to take ownership, contribute ideas, and make a real impact on our clients and projects.
This position is tied to an immediate FEL 3 study with the potential to transition into future project execution and additional long-term opportunities as our workload continues to grow.
