Café All-Rounder (Kitchen Focus)

Apprentice Café is a chef-driven, from-scratch café built around care, consistency, and craft. Our chef refined his skills working in European kitchens, and that foundation informs how we approach bread, baking, ice cream, coffee, and service every day. Everything we serve is made in-house, with close attention to detail and process.
We are looking for a full-time café all-rounder with a strong kitchen, baking, and prep focus, who is also comfortable supporting barista and front-of-house service during busy periods.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with their hands, values doing things properly, and takes pride in contributing to a small, focused team.
The Reality of the Role:
This job can be busy and demanding. Apprentice Café is a small team, so everyone helps everywhere. You should be comfortable with:
- Standing for long periods
- Moving quickly during rushes
- Switching between kitchen, service, and support tasks
- Repetitive prep work
- Direct feedback during service
- Working independently once trained
If you are mainly looking for a relaxed café vibe, this probably is not the right fit. If you enjoy learning, moving with purpose, and being part of a serious small team, it may be a strong fit.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with daily kitchen production, including:
- Baking bread, loaves, cookies, and pastries
- Preparing and churning house-made ice cream
- Ingredient prep for breakfast sandwiches and café menu items
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organization, and food safety
- Support barista and front-of-house service during peak hours
- Work efficiently in a fast-paced environment with many moving pieces
- Communicate clearly and take ownership of tasks without constant direction
Ideal Candidate
- Culinary, baking, pastry, or hospitality training (an asset)
- Previous café, bakery, or kitchen experience (an asset)
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a small team
- Detail-oriented, calm under pressure, and dependable
- Genuinely interested in food, baking, and learning across disciplines
