Position Summary
The Plasma Machine Operator is responsible for the safe and accurate operation of plasma cutting equipment in a fabrication environment. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, the ability to read and interpret technical drawings, and a commitment to quality and workplace safety. The operator will work closely with the production team to fulfill work orders and support downstream processes including shipping and receiving.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate plasma cutting machine safely and efficiently; load and unload parts as required.
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and work orders to ensure accurate cuts and part specifications.
- Follow production schedules and ensure work orders are completed and progressed on time.
- Route completed parts to the appropriate next step — shipping department, as directed.
- Operate forklifts and overhead cranes safely and in compliance with workplace safety standards.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance and housekeeping of plasma equipment and work area.
- Apply knowledge of metal properties including weights, thicknesses, and grades to support accurate material selection.
- Identify cut features in drawings such as bevels, counter-sinks, and drilled and tapped holes, and handle them appropriately.
- Use precision measuring tools (calipers, radius gauges, etc.) to verify part dimensions and quality.
- Utilize plasma machine software and basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Excel) for job tracking and production reporting.
Qualifications & Requirements
Required
- Demonstrated ability to operate plasma cutting equipment safely and correctly.
- Understanding of metal material properties including weights, thicknesses, and applicable grades.
- Proficiency with precision measuring instruments such as calipers and radius gauges.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including cut features such as bevels, counter-sinks, and drilled and tapped holes.
- Basic computer literacy including familiarity with Microsoft Excel and plasma machine software.
- Valid forklift operator certification or ability to obtain certification; experience with overhead cranes.
Preferred
- Formal training with a plasma, laser, or similar CNC cutting equipment vendor.
- Previous on-the-job experience operating plasma or laser cutting machinery.
- Experience with re-nesting, working with oversize sheets, irregular shapes, and drop/remnant material to optimize yield.
- Previous forklift and overhead crane operational experience in a manufacturing environment.
Working Conditions
- Manufacturing shop environment; exposure to metal dust, noise, fumes, and heat generated during plasma cutting operations.
- Required to stand for extended periods and lift materials in accordance with safe lifting practices.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toed boots is required at all times.
- Must comply with all company safety policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
- The successful candidate will initially work the morning shift for approximately the first six (6) months for training and onboarding, after which the position will transition to the afternoon shift (3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.).
Pay: $27.00-$29.00 per hour
