PWO Canada is a Tier 1 and Tier 2 supplier for auto manufacturers globally. We are one of five subsidiaries in the PWO AG Group, manufacturing lightweight metal components for the automotive industry.
PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Tooling Supervisor is responsible for directing, coordinating and supervising all activities for the department and staff including Tool and Die Makers, Machinists, apprentices, and Team Leaders. The Tooling Supervisor is responsible for all tooling activities on all shifts. The incumbent responds to any problems employees have, and if he/she cannot solve the problem, he/she escalates the issue up the managerial chain. He/she is responsible for the quality and quantity of work coming out of the Machine and Tooling group. Internal contacts include Production, Maintenance, Tooling Engineering, Logistics, Shipping and Quality Assurance. He/She is to ensure that tooling cost – cost associated with tooling repair, PM and spare and manhours are being monitored and support Tooling KPI objectives to meet department targets.
The position is responsible for directing the work of others with supervisory responsibilities. Decisions made by this position impact the department in the short and long-term.
NATURE AND SCOPE OF POSITION
The position will problem solve with managers, vendors, purchasing and logistics when documentation clarification is required. The incumbent must be able to prioritize and organize work, especially at month and year-ends. External contacts may include vendors and financial auditors. Major challenges include finding information that is the responsibility of other departments (i.e. Quality Services, Maintenance, Logistics, Shipping and Receiving). Decisions made by the position impact the department in the short term.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Licensed Tool & Die Maker or post‑secondary technical program (or equivalent)
Knowledge and Skills: The Tooling Supervisor must have strong knowledge of tool & die, stamping presses (progressive and transfer), tooling scheduling, and OH&S/quality standards. good knowledge of solids based 3D CAD design system, using SOLID EDGE and or Unigraphics. Proficiency in MS Office and ability to manage documentation and reporting.
Communication Skills: Communicates regularly with Tool & Die Makers and Apprentices, Team Leads, Supervisors, Managers and fellow employees. Strong communication skills (written and verbal), ability to work well with and direct activities of the supporting department(s). Must be able to interact with other team members in order to achieve goals.
Nature and Length of Experience: Minimum 5 years of industry experience beyond certification and minimum 3+ years of supervisory/leadership experience in an automotive manufacturing environment. Experience delegating tasks, driving KPIs, and leading teams effectively.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and coordinate daily tooling activities, including troubleshooting, minor repairs, and support for die and equipment issues.
- Assign work, manage manpower planning, and ensure smooth tool setups and production readiness.
- Monitor tooling costs, track KPIs, and develop improvement countermeasures.
- Handle administrative tasks: scheduling updates, time/attendance corrections, overtime approvals, vacation planning, and documentation review.
- Support training needs and skill development in partnership with HR.
- Communicate with Production, Maintenance, and Logistics regarding delays, repairs, or schedule impacts.
- Coach and supervise employees, providing feedback, discipline, and performance reviews.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, company policies, and 5S requirements.
- Participate in tool design reviews, engineering changes, and tool buyoffs.
- Coordinate outsourced PM activities and support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist in annual business planning for staffing and tooling investments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
