Position Summary
The Principal of Kitasoo Community School provides visionary educational leadership and day-to-day management for a K–12 school serving the Kitasoo Xai’xais Nation. The Principal ensures high-quality instruction, culturally grounded learning, student well-being, and strong community relationships. This role oversees all academic programs, staff supervision, support for post-secondary students of the Nation, and operational functions. The Principal works in alignment with the Band Manager, School Committee/Board, and Chief & Council to advance educational excellence rooted in Indigenous knowledge, values, and community priorities.
Key Responsibilities1. Instructional Leadership
- Provide clear academic vision and direction to strengthen teaching and learning across all grades (K–12).
- Lead development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum, assessment, and school-wide instructional practices.
- Support differentiated instruction, literacy and numeracy initiatives, and inclusive education practices for all learners.
- Promote trauma-informed, land-based, and culturally responsive pedagogy.
2. Staff Supervision & Human Resources
- Recruit, onboard, supervise, and evaluate teachers, EAs, and support staff according to Kitasoo Xai’xais policies.
- Conduct scheduled classroom observations and provide constructive feedback for professional growth.
- Build a collaborative, positive, and accountable school culture focused on student success.
- Work with HR to manage hiring processes, contracts, and personnel matters.
3. Student Success, Safety & Well-Being
- Foster a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment for all students.
- Implement behaviour support, attendance initiatives, and student well-being strategies.
- Oversee support plans for students with exceptionalities in partnership with EAs, specialists, and families.
- Lead school-wide initiatives supporting mental health, cultural identity, and holistic development.
4. Community, Culture & Partnerships
- Strengthen relationships with parents, guardians, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members.
- Integrate local culture, language, and land-based learning into school activities and curriculum.
- Collaborate with partner agencies, post-secondary institutions, and education networks to enhance opportunities for students.
- Support post-secondary students of the Nation by providing guidance, mentorship, resource coordination, and education planning support.
- Represent the school at community events, meetings, and inter-agency collaborations.
5. Administration & Operations
- Oversee daily school operations, scheduling, supervision duties, attendance monitoring, and communication systems.
- Manage school budgets, purchasing, reporting, and compliance with policies and funding agreements.
- Ensure safety protocols, emergency preparedness, and building procedures are maintained.
- Maintain accurate records and reports for the Band Manager, School Committee, and external partners.
6. Governance & Reporting
- Report directly to the Band Manager and work closely with the School Committee/Board.
- Attend School Committee meetings, providing updates, reports, and recommendations for decision-making.
- Ensure school policies, staffing decisions, and programs align with community goals and approved procedures.
- Implement decisions and directives from the Band Manager, School Committee, and Chief & Council.
7. Support for Post-Secondary Students
- Coordinate support services for Kitasoo Xai’xais post-secondary students, including:
- Assistance with applications, funding, and documentation
- Guidance on academic pathways and program selection
- Arranging mentorship, laptops, and essential supports
- Helping students navigate transitions between high school, upgrading, trades, and post-secondary programs
- Act as a key liaison between the Nation and external institutions to ensure student success.
8. Strategic Planning & School Improvement
- Lead the development and implementation of school improvement plans.
- Use data to inform decision-making related to instruction, attendance, behaviour, and program development.
- Pursue grants, partnerships, and innovation opportunities to support school and community growth.
- Champion long-term planning for staffing, infrastructure, student pathways, and cultural programming.

Pay: $150,000.00-$164,000.00 per year
