About the Role
The Transition House, Child and Youth Support Worker (C&YSW) create a welcoming and safe environment for the residents of Yew Transition House (YTH). C&YSW’s priority is to provide emotional support, advocacy, childcare and supervised activities for children and youth and works in collaboration with other YTH staff to support guardians and residents. When children and youth are not present in the house, the C&YSW is also responsible for Women Support Worker duties within scheduled hours (see attached Women Support Worker job description). This is a BCGEU (union) position that reports to the Program Lead.
What You’ll Do

Welcomes and orients children to the house so they feel safe and at ease by providing opportunities to identify, express and understand their feelings regarding violence and family separation.

Completes intake with the child’s guardians and assists with school arrangements as necessary.

Implements and adheres to Ministry of Child and Family Development (MCFD) legislation, YTH and SCCSS policies, procedures and protocols.

Advocates for a child's personal/physical/emotional/sexual safety and personal growth by referring children to other services or agencies and accompanying them to appointments when appropriate.
- Collaborates with other YTH staff to support the intake process for new residents, daily administrative tasks, and efficient and effective operations.
- Ensures the smooth operations of the house by performing operational duties such as shopping, stocking the pantry, yard work and basic housekeeping.
- Helps children and youth recognize their rights and responsibilities including creating safety plans.

Maintains the indoor and outdoor play areas and implement age-appropriate activities such as music, arts, crafts, cooking and community outings.

Assists mothers to understand the unique needs of children who have been exposed to violence in the home and are experiencing separation/loss reactions.
- Provides support, encouragement and practical, positive parenting skills to women dealing with their children’s behavioral and emotional concerns.

Provides mothers with knowledge of community resources.
- Orients new YTH staff to the Child and Youth Support Program.

Collaborates with the Program Coordinator, ensures participants have opportunities to be engaged in program oversight, development and implementation.

Ensures effective service delivery consistent with agency mandate, policy, meeting all legal, contractual, financial and other compliance requirements.

What You Bring

Post-secondary degree in a related field an asset, or the equivalent in education and experience.

Three years of experience working directly with children and one or more years of experience working in a transition house.
- Ability to work a variety of shifts including evenings and weekends to accommodate the needs of the clients.

Demonstrated ability to be non-judgmental and provide supportive relationships with residents without imparting personal values or preferences.

Experience working with a diverse population with a demonstrated ability to communicate with participants in a non-judgmental and empathetic manner while setting and maintaining boundaries.
- Familiarity with the job responsibilities of the YTH Women’s Support Worker.
- Experience applying a feminist analysis of gender violence as it affects children, women and trans folks.

Solid understanding of the systemic issues that need to be addressed in order to decrease violence against women and children.

A trauma-informed practice approach.

Knowledge of family systems and culturally competent practices.
- Good working knowledge of the local, provincial, and federal legislation and regulations relevant to the work.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively across programs and with community partners.

Criminal Record Check (CRC) clearance is required for this role.

Emergency Child Care First Aid certification is required.
Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle are required for transporting clients. -
Ability to lift, move, and handle a variety of items, including recreation, office, and household supplies/equipment, as well as safely lift and hold infants and children.

Ability to engage in physical and floor-level activities and perform routine household tasks, such as sitting and playing with children, grocery shopping, gardening, cleaning, and general maintenance.
