The Unit Clerk is a vital member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team, responsible for managing the full scope of administrative operations on designated care, treatment, and unit care areas. Acting as a central liaison among patients, families, and clinical staff, the Unit Clerk ensures timely and accurate communication, documentation, and coordination of care-related processes. Unit Clerks apply their knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare systems to support admissions, transfers, and discharges; maintain essential records; and facilitate smooth unit workflow. They also oversee inventory and supplies, assist with scheduling and timekeeping functions, and serve as Downtime Captains during system outages, helping ensure continuity of operations in high-pressure environments. In rare or exceptional circumstances, and in the interest of maintaining seamless, efficient, and patient centred care, the Unit Clerk may provide limited assistance to clinical colleagues within the boundaries of their training, skills, and established role. Together, these responsibilities highlight the essential contribution Unit Clerks make in creating an organized, responsive, and reliable care environment that supports patients, residents and the interdisciplinary team. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the CUPE 2111 Collective Agreement.
