About Fern Kids
Fern Kids is a Canadian designer and manufacturer of design-first furniture, millwork, and play spaces for child care centres, schools, and institutions. We are based in Moorefield, Ontario, and everything we make is built in Canada.
What started as a furniture company has grown into a broader design and manufacturing business. Through Fern Studio, we take on custom commercial millwork, built-in cabinetry, and fully designed play-space installations for clients across Canada and internationally. Our work ends up in daycares, schools, commercial spaces, and specialty projects where quality, durability, and clean design matter.
We are a growing shop with varied, hands-on work. We are looking for someone who takes pride in their craft, works well with a small team, and can help bring custom projects from the shop floor through to final installation.
The Role
Fern Kids is looking for a skilled Millwork, Commercial Cabinetry & Installation Technician to join our team full-time.
This role is split between shop work and on-site installations. You will help fabricate custom millwork and cabinetry in our Moorefield shop, then support installations on client sites. Most installation work is in Ontario, with occasional travel to other provinces and some international projects.
This is not a repetitive production-line role. The work is varied, the projects are custom, and the right person will be involved in both building and installing the finished work.
What You’ll Be Doing
Shop Work
- Cut, assemble, and finish custom millwork and cabinetry components
- Build from shop drawings, cut lists, and project details
- Sand, prep, and complete finish work to a high standard
- Operate shop tools and equipment safely and efficiently
- Help keep the shop organized, clean, and production-ready
Custom Millwork & Cabinetry
- Fabricate commercial cabinetry, built-ins, furniture components, and specialty pieces
- Work with Baltic birch, hardwood, sheet goods, and related materials
- Read and interpret shop drawings accurately
- Pay close attention to fit, finish, alignment, and detail
On-Site Installation
- Install custom millwork, cabinetry, and furniture systems on commercial job sites
- Work on projects in child care centres, schools, commercial spaces, and specialty environments
- Complete layout, site prep, scribing, shimming, fastening, and touch-ups
- Work cleanly and professionally, including on occupied or near-occupied sites
- Represent Fern Kids well when working around clients, contractors, and project teams
What We’re Looking For
Required
- 3+ years of experience in millwork and/or commercial cabinetry
- Strong knowledge of commercial millwork and cabinetry materials, methods, and standards
- Ability to read and interpret shop drawings and cut lists
- Valid driver’s licence
- Comfortable working both in the shop and on job sites
- Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to work independently when needed
- Professional attitude — you will represent Fern Kids on client sites
Assets, but not required
- Experience with CNC, edge banding, or case goods manufacturing
- Installation experience in commercial environments
- Red Seal Cabinetmaker or Carpenter certification
Compensation & Details
- Full-time, permanent position
- Shop-based in Moorefield, ON
- In-shop work plus on-site installations
- Travel mostly within Ontario, with occasional out-of-province and international project travel
- Opportunity to work on unique, design-focused commercial projects
Pay: $21.00-$27.00 per hour
