The Opportunity:
The City of Airdrie’s Environmental Policy and Compliance team is responsible for protecting and enhancing the community’s natural environment through monitoring, assessment, and stewardship initiatives. The Environmental Technician supports the City’s environmental protection and sustainability goals by conducting technical field and office-based work that contributes to the protection of water quality, natural areas, wildlife, and ecological systems.
This position assists environmental policy and compliance staff with day-to-day technical activities, including environmental monitoring, data collection, and regulatory support. The Environmental Technician also contributes to community engagement efforts related to watershed stewardship and environmental education.
Responsibilities include:
- Creating and maintaining photo logs to document environmental conditions and field observations
- Collecting riparian area data and restoration data to evaluate and support the protection of sensitive ecological areas
- Compiling and maintaining Environmental Management System (EMS) data
- Assisting with organizing regulatory approvals and compliance-related data
- Collecting, organizing, and analyzing environmental data
- Supporting the delivery of environmental education and watershed stewardship programs
- Assist in reviewing ecological signs for proper content and recommend edits or additions.
- Assist in monitoring surface water levels using technical field equipment and digital recording systems
- Assisting with conducting water quality sampling
- Reviewing Environmental Records Viewer to support environmental compliance activities
- Collecting wildlife and vegetation data to assist in tracking biodiversity and ecosystem health
- Supporting with erosion and sediment control
- Other job duties as assigned
You Bring:
- Recognized post-secondary education (or working towards) in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Engineering, or a related field
- Understanding of ecological site conditions, habitats, wildlife, ecosystems, wetlands, and watercourses
- Basic understanding of Alberta environmental legislation and municipal governance processes
- Familiarity with environmental monitoring techniques, field data collection methods, and basic data management principles
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s Licence
- Strong analytical and observational skills with attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in both field and office environments
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated interest in environmental stewardship and sustainability
- Professional conduct and the ability to represent the City of Airdrie positively in community settings

Additional Information:
This is a term (2 Month) position with full time hours of 37.5 hours per week. Possibility of a term extension is based on operational needs; however, it is not guaranteed.
