PRIMARY PURPOSE
Works with BCRTC and West Coast Express stakeholders to ensure a culture of safety for all BCRTC employees. Supports the organization through provision of subject matter expertise relating to prevention and safety compliance, including safety policies and WorkSafeBC regulatory requirements. Assists the Manager in developing and implementing comprehensive occupational health and safety strategies and plans and coordinating activities relating to workplace injuries. Plans and coordinates initiatives and campaigns to support employee safety. Maintains registers to support legal and compliance reporting requirements.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Provides subject matter expertise in developing, implementing, and administering prevention and safety compliance programs, including (but not limited to) programs relating to lockout / tag out, confined spaces, ergonomics, and industrial hygiene, working closely with other departmental teams including the Operation & Maintenance Safety support team and the Occupational Health & Wellness department.
Works with stakeholders across BCRTC and West Coast Express (WCE) to ensure a culture of safety and commitment to “Zero Harm” for all employees. Develops and implements occupational health and safety programs, accident prevention initiatives, and campaigns that are compliant with WorkSafeBC (WSBC) regulations to promote physical safety and mental health for BCRTC employees. Develops and implements appropriate occupational health and safety procedures.
Conducts or supports occupational health and safety audits, including the COR audit, to ensure the organization remains in compliance with relevant safety policies and WSBC regulatory requirements. Coordinates activities between BCRTC, WCE, and WSBC related to workplace injuries and ensures injury claims are properly reported, addressed, and resolved. Acts as a liaison between BCRTC, WCE, and WSBC relating to safety and compliance issues.
Develops and coordinates safety campaigns that promote industrial hygiene and other safe work practices to mitigate risks and eliminate or minimize harm to workers.
Supports the claims management team with investigations and information required for reporting workplace injuries, determining suitability of work for Return to Work cases, collaboratively reviewing claims-related statistics to implement prevention campaigns, and any other required support.
Assists the Manager in developing and implementing comprehensive occupational health and safety strategies and plans, establishing metrics and Key Performance Indicators, and providing subject matter expertise relating to the collection and analysis of appropriate statistics and data. Liaises closely with data analytics team to ensure quality data is collected and data-driven actions, initiatives and projects are defined.
Conducts or supports the Manager in investigations of occupational health and safety incidents occurring in BCRTC and WCE workplaces. Ensures investigations are performed consistently, accurately, and within established timeframes. Interprets findings and recommends and implements corrective action plans.
Maintains registers to support legal and compliance reporting requirements for occupational health and safety. Supports the Manager in communicating and reporting relevant information to appropriate internal and external stakeholders. Prepares comprehensive executive-level reports regarding occupational health and safety performance, outlining key metrics, trends, and areas for enhancement.
Liaises with training departments to ensure comprehensive delivery of occupational health and safety training. Provides training as needed to BCRTC leaders and staff on occupational heath and safety practices.
Supports the Manager in budgeting and managing departmental expenditures and assists in the preparation of the departmental budget.
Leads, coaches and trains the coordinators and participates in hiring, training, and development of the junior staff members.
