For over 20 years, Larga Kivalliq has been operating a medical boarding home for patients and their escorts from Nunavut. Our services include accommodation, meals, ground transportation to and from the airport and medical appointments, and recreation services.
Position Overview
The Cook is responsible for managing the preparation and cooking of meals and snacks. They ensure the kitchen and food prep areas are clean and well maintained. They are also responsible for setting up and overseeing the food buffets, delegating tasks to the Kitchen Helpers and operating equipment, tools, utensils, and appliances in a safe manner. The Cook will ensure a high level of quality for all food served.
Schedule will be full-time 40 hours Sunday - Thursday.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Ensure all ingredients are in stock daily to complete the menu.
- Adjust menu as needed during equipment failures or delivery issues.
- Prepare and cook special meals for patients as instructed by a dietitian or medical professional.
- Set up and oversee food buffets.
- Prepare and cook complete meals and prepare snacks up to kitchen and regulation standards.
- Ensure food preparation, and cooking areas are clean and organized.
- Delegate tasks to the kitchen helpers.
- Maintain the Service line during mealtimes.
- Relay accurate ingredient lists to inquiring clients.
- Maintain temperatures on refrigeration and freezer units, and dishwashing machines.
- Operate kitchen equipment, tools, utensils and appliances in a safe manner.
- Report all cases of food quality or kitchen equipment issues to the Kitchen Manager.
- Ensure leftover food is stored and dates are recorded to ensure maximum freshness.
- Maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and grooming.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education & Qualifications
- Highschool diploma or equivalent.
- 1 year experience in a kitchen environment is required.
- Possession of a valid Food Handlers Certificate is required.
- Expert knowledge of various cooking methods and procedures.
- Understanding of food preparation techniques.
- Ability to follow recipe instructions.
- Ability to withstand long hours of standing, bending, and moving around.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Basic knowledge of mathematics to make correct measurements of ingredients
- Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills.
- Proficient knowledge of food safety standards and practices.
- Ability to use common kitchen equipment, tools, utensils and appliances safely.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
