Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Shore (BBBS South Shore) is a youth‑serving charity that empowers young people to realize their full potential through the power of mentoring relationships. As part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada federation, we work with families, volunteers, schools, and community partners to create safe, consistent, and life‑changing matches for children and youth across the South Shore. This service area includes the Lunenburg and Queen’s county areas: Hubbards, Chester, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg, Bridgewater and Liverpool.
We are seeking a collaborative, community‑minded Executive Director to lead our organization, based in Bridgewater Nova Scotia, into its next chapter of growth and impact.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides overall leadership and management of BBBS South Shore in alignment with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada standards, policies, and mission. You will:
- Lead a small, dedicated staff team to maximize and support high‑quality mentoring relationships for children and youth.
- Work closely with schools, community partners, and referral sources across the South Shore to identify young people who can benefit from mentoring and to recruit, screen, and support volunteers.
- Provide strategic leadership and partner with the Board to develop and implement annual and long‑term plans, including program, fundraising, and community engagement goals.
- Oversee day‑to‑day operations, including program delivery, risk management, reporting, and compliance with national standards, policy and relevant legislation.
- Serve as the primary spokesperson and ambassador for BBBS South Shore, building strong relationships with donors, funders and community stakeholders.
- Lead fundraising and revenue‑development efforts, including events, grants, sponsorships, and donor stewardship, in partnership with staff and the Board.
- Provide sound financial management: prepare and monitor the annual budget, oversee financial reporting, and ensure the responsible stewardship of all resources.
- Recruit, supervise, and support staff and key volunteers, fostering a positive, inclusive, and accountable organizational culture aligned with BBBS values.
Qualifications
- Post‑secondary education in social sciences, community development, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 3–5 years of progressive leadership experience, ideally in the non‑profit, public, or community sector, including staff supervision and budgeting responsibility.
- Demonstrated commitment to the well‑being of children and youth; experience in a youth‑serving or mentoring organization is a strong asset.
- Proven experience in fundraising, donor relations, and/or revenue development (events, grants, sponsorships, individual giving).
- Strong strategic thinking, planning, and organizational skills, with the ability to move between big‑picture vision and hands‑on execution.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to build trust and work effectively with diverse stakeholders (youth, families, volunteers, staff, Board, funders, and community partners).
- Experience working with or reporting to a Board of Directors and comfort operating within a governance framework.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and comfort learning new digital tools and databases.
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends to support events, meetings, and community engagements.
