Job description

Develops and conducts research projects in ML and deep learning theory, including formulating research questions, deriving theoretical results, and proposing new methods of analysis.

Establishes the design and development of research methodology, including problem formulation, proof techniques, and the interpretation of theoretical and empirical results.
-
Plans and leads the development of small-scale experiments to empirically validate theoretical findings, including data collection, implementation of baselines, and analysis of results.

Develops and implements new methods of analysis applicable to the research projects of the group.

Leads the analysis and interpretation of research data and disseminates the results through scientific publications, technical reports, and presentations.

Writes theoretical and methodological papers and articles for publication in peer-reviewed conferences and journals.

Assists with the preparation and writing of grant applications and related research funding documents.

Collaborates with other researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and students within the group on joint research projects and publications.

Provides functional supervision and technical guidance to Research Assistants and Undergraduate/Graduate Student Research Assistants, including helping students with their ongoing research projects.

Organizes, distributes, and verifies the work of research staff and participates in their training.

Presents research results at internal seminars, group meetings, and at national and international conferences and workshops.

Meets and coordinates with relevant research groups, faculty, and staff at Mila and McGill to foster collaboration and exchange of ideas.

Performs various administrative tasks related to the research project.

Responsible for the quality and results of their own work and the work of those they oversee.
Other qualifying skills

Strong mathematical foundation, particularly in areas such as probability, statistics, optimization, and/or learning theory.

Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research in ML and deep learning theory, with a strong publication record at top-tier ML venues (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR).

Ability to translate theoretical results into focused experimental validation, including proficiency in Python and standard ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch or JAX).

Excellent written and oral scientific communication skills, including the ability to present research clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a research team environment and to mentor junior researchers and students.
-
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple concurrent research activities.
Experience and Education
-
PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field, with a specialization in machine learning or a related discipline.

At least five (5) years of research experience in machine learning, including doctoral and postdoctoral work.

Advanced specialized knowledge of ML and deep learning theory.

Track record of peer-reviewed publications at top-tier ML venues (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR).

Experience supervising or mentoring graduate and/or undergraduate students is an asset.

Must be eligible to hold a position at the university.
