About DirectHedge
DirectHedge is building the operating system for physical lumber trading. Our platform combines an order management system (OMS), an anonymous physical lumber exchange, and an AI layer called DirectIntelligence (DI) that automates the operational workflows traders and buyers deal with every day. We're a small, fast-moving team based in Vancouver, and everything we ship goes live to real users.
The Role
You'll own features end to end. That means sitting in on an onboarding call, learning how a customer actually runs their business, working out where the platform falls short, building the fix, and shipping it — then doing it again with the next customer.
There's plenty of work already specced out and waiting. But if you see something that should exist, you have the freedom to spec it out and build it. We want someone who comes in with energy and good ideas and wants to execute on them — not someone waiting to be told what's next. You'll work directly with the founder, and decisions get made the same day.
What You'll Work On
Full-Stack Feature Development: Build and ship complete features, frontend through database. You own the whole surface, not a slice of it.
Data Modeling: Design the data model as the platform grows into new parts of the supply chain. This matters more than anything else on the list.
Trader-Facing Dashboards: Build the dashboards and data-heavy interfaces that traders use all day, backed by real-time data — websockets, live pricing, and position updates.
AI & Agent Layer: Extend the AI and agent layer that handles automation and intelligence across the platform.
Customer Onboarding: Run onboarding calls with mills, traders, and buyers, and turn what you hear directly into product. Chase down edge cases before customers find them.
What We're Looking For
Required:
– 5+ years building and maintaining production software.
– Genuinely full stack — comfortable anywhere in the stack.
– Strong data modeling. This matters more than anything else on the list.
– Experience building dashboards or data-heavy UI.
– Hands-on with AI tooling, agents, automation, and MCP.
– Comfortable with real-time data, websockets, live pricing, and position updates.
– Able to pick up an unfamiliar codebase and make it better.
– You explain technical decisions in plain language. You'll be working with a non-technical founder, so making the tradeoffs clear matters as much as making the call.
– You move fast and iterate. We ship, watch how customers use it, and adjust — we don't spend three weeks planning first.
– You learn a new industry fast and get genuinely interested in how it works.
– Comfortable on a call with a 55-year-old trader who doesn't care about software.
Strong Signals (Not Required):
– Futures, commodities, trading, or fintech background.
– You've built supply chain, logistics, rail, or freight software.
– You've worked on an exchange, marketplace, or order-matching system.
– You've worked at a small company, an agency, or run your own thing.
– You've sold or supported software to a non-technical industry.
Not a Fit If
– You want to stay in the codebase and have someone else talk to customers.
– You need tickets written for you.
– You need full requirements and a locked scope before you start.
– You want a large team around you.
What You'll Get
– Full ownership. You'll take features from an onboarding call all the way to production and watch real users depend on them.
– Direct work with the founder. No layers of middle management — decisions get made the same day.
– Room to build. Plenty is specced out, but if you see something that should exist, you have the freedom to make the case and build it.
– Real impact in an industry that's never had software like this. Lumber runs on phone calls, spreadsheets, and software written in the 90s. We're replacing it.
