We’re looking for a curious, creative, and detail‑driven Electrical Designer to join our engineering team. If you love solving complex problems, enjoy turning ideas into real‑world electrical systems, and get a thrill from seeing your designs come to life on the shop floor, you’ll fit right in.
In this role, you’ll design and develop custom switchgear systems—translating customer needs into clear, accurate electrical and mechanical designs. You’ll create installation plans, produce engineering documentation, and ensure every layout, schematic, and component meets the highest standards for performance, safety, and compliance. You’ll collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and project teams to deliver solutions that are reliable, cost‑effective, and built to last.
About Us
Sabre is where big ideas meet big power. We’re an electrical manufacturing and integration company that supports complex power‑distribution and electrical‑integration projects across North America. Our teams blend engineering, manufacturing, and project execution into one fast‑moving, schedule‑driven operation. If you like solving real‑world challenges, working with sharp people, and seeing your designs turn into hardware that actually moves electrons, you’ll feel right at home here.
What Do Electrical Designers Do?
Electrical Designers at Sabre are the people who turn concepts into reality.
You will:
- Design electrical panel schematics and manufacturing outputs.
- Translate customer input into clear product requirements.
- Apply industry standards and regulatory requirements with confidence.
- Select and specify electrical components that make systems work flawlessly.
- Perform DFMEA, derating, arc‑fault, and heat‑loss calculations.
- Create detailed concept and production drawings.
- Participate in design reviews and contribute your expertise.
- Support and mentor junior engineers and technologists.
Duties
You’ll take ownership of designing and developing electrical components and systems for custom switchgear products, including:
- Circuit breakers, disconnect switches, busbars, and enclosures.
- LV/MV switchgear using ACBs, VCBs, SF6 breakers, MCCs, and e‑houses.
- Welded cells, bolted parts, and busbar systems that integrate purchased components.
- Reviewing customer specifications, sales quotes, vendor documentation, drawings, and diagrams.
- Applying Sabre standards, procedures, and QMS requirements to all designs.
- Meeting with customers to interpret and clarify design specifications.
- Producing electrical schematics, layouts, and design outputs for review and approval.
- Collaborating with engineering, design, and production teams to resolve constraints and issues.
- Ensuring compliance with NEC, UL, CEC, CSA, ESA, IEEE, and ANSI standards.
- Creating BOMs, technical reports, and engineering documentation.
- Supporting procurement and project teams with technical input.
- Revising drawings based on change orders and customer requests.
- Providing technical clarification to electricians and installers.
Required Technical Expertise
You’ll thrive in this role if you bring:
- Mechanical and electrical design experience in custom switchgear or electrical equipment.
- Strong knowledge of NEC (NFPA 70), UL 508A, UL 891, UL 1558, and CSA standards.
- Experience with high‑power system design and compliance testing.
- Hands‑on testing, debugging, and commissioning experience.
- Experience transferring designs to manufacturing and supporting product launches.
- A solid understanding of Design for Manufacturability (DFM).
Skills, Education & Training
We’re looking for someone with:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
- An Electrical Engineering Technology diploma or certificate.
- 8+ years of relevant electrical hardware or switchgear design experience.
- Experience managing the full design lifecycle from concept to production.
- A combination of education and experience that demonstrates strong technical capability.
