Position Summary
Reporting to the Mechanical Supervisor and working with/under FSRs (Field Service Representatives) of various supply and manufacturer companies, the Mechanical Fitter will disassemble, clean, inspect, repair, and reassemble mechanical components on ships, including tail shafts, propellers, rudders, steering systems, bearings, pumps, motors, sea valves, windlasses, davits, cranes, bow/stern thrusters, and other mechanical components. Responsibilities include reading blueprints, precisely fitting parts to ensure proper functionality and compliance with engineering specifications. The Mechanical Fitter will ensure the mechanical systems of the ship operate efficiently and reliably, acting as a skilled mechanic in maintaining optimal ship performance.
Key Responsibilities

Conduct pre-use inspections of tools and equipment to ensure they are in safe working condition.

Conduct daily field level risk assessments to identify safety hazards on job sites.

Mechanically fit and install marine hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, pumps, hoses, engines, gearboxes, generators, bilge pumps, valves, lazy rods, and other mechanical components.

Service and maintain propulsion systems, steering systems, tail shafts, propellers, rudders, bearings, and deck machinery.

Conduct hydrostatic/pressure tests of tanks and other components.

Clean, inspect, organize, and track parts per task numbers.

Read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, technical manuals, and equipment specifications.

Demonstrate flexibility to meet deadlines, proactively identifying and addressing potential delays while communicating concerns and proposing solutions to management.

Collaborate with and assist colleagues to support daily operational needs.

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.

Perform other duties as assigned or required to support operations.
Qualifications & Experience

High School Diploma, Grade 12, or equivalent.

Completion of a recognized Mechanical/Millwright, Marine Mechanical, Marine Engineering, or related skilled-trades program.

Valid Ontario 433A Certificate of Qualification and/or Red Seal endorsement is a strong asset.

3–4 years of hands-on mechanical fitting, millwright, mechanical maintenance, or related industrial experience.

Previous experience in ship repair, marine maintenance, propulsion systems, or shipyard operations.

Working knowledge of rigging practices, including safe movement of heavy components, use of chain falls, slings and shackles, and understanding of crane signals and rigging terminology.

Welding and oxy/acetylene cutting competency is an asset.

Demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Demonstrate strong attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions precisely.

Must have adequate physical fitness to fulfill demanding tasks with a willingness to work in various weather conditions year-round.
