Food Service Supervisor
The Food Service Supervisor reports to the Food Service and Nutrition Manager and will follow the policies and procedures outlined by Westhills Care Centre, the Ministry of Long-Term Care, Public Health, Occupational Health and Safety, and other governing bodies.
This is a full-time position with hours split between Food Service Supervisor duties and Dietary Aide duties. The successful candidate will support the daily operations of the dietary department while also participating directly in meal service and dietary tasks as required. This role is best suited for someone who is organized, dependable, resident-focused, and comfortable working both as a supervisor and as part of the dietary team.
Food Service Supervisor Responsibilities:
- Provides supervision and support to dietary staff during meal service to ensure meals are served safely, accurately, and according to resident diets, textures, preferences, and care needs.
- Assists with the daily operations of the food service department under the direction of the Food Service and Nutrition Manager.
- Places food and supply orders as assigned, monitors inventory, receives deliveries, and ensures proper storage, labeling, rotation, and handling of food and supplies.
- Assists with staff scheduling, replacement of shifts, call-ins, and communication with dietary team members as assigned.
- Monitors meal service in dining rooms and resident home areas to ensure quality, timing, portioning, temperature, presentation, and resident satisfaction.
- Completes dietary audits, meal service audits, sanitation audits, temperature audits, and other departmental audits as assigned.
- Supports compliance with Ministry of Long-Term Care requirements, Public Health requirements, infection prevention and control practices, and internal policies and procedures.
- Provides training, orientation, coaching, and ongoing support to new and existing dietary staff.
- Assists with ensuring dietary staff follow safe food handling practices, infection control procedures, proper documentation requirements, and established routines.
- Supports the implementation of therapeutic menus, texture-modified diets, allergies, preferences, dislikes, nourishments, and other resident-specific dietary requirements.
- Communicates concerns regarding resident meal intake, food preferences, texture concerns, service issues, or dietary changes to the Food Service and Nutrition Manager, Registered Dietitian, nursing team, or other appropriate team members.
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives and assists with identifying opportunities to improve workflow, meal service, resident satisfaction, and departmental processes.
- Assists with maintaining records related to food service operations, audits, staff training, temperatures, sanitation, inventory, and other required documentation.
- Follows safe work practices and reports hazards, equipment concerns, supply concerns, or service issues promptly.
- Performs Dietary Aide duties as scheduled, including serving meals, assembling nourishment carts, setting up dining rooms, clearing dishes, operating dishwashing equipment, stocking serveries, and assisting with food preparation as permitted.
- Participates in meetings, in-services, education sessions, and departmental communication as assigned.
- Maintains a respectful, professional, and resident-focused approach when working with residents, families, staff, visitors, and external partners.
- Other duties as assigned by the Food Service and Nutrition Manager or designate.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current Food Handler Certification is required.
- Completion of a Food Service Worker certificate, or a recognized Food Service Worker/Dietary Aide program
- Food Service and Nutrition Management education, or enrollment in a recognized Food Service and Nutrition Management program, is considered an asset.
- Previous experience in long-term care, retirement, healthcare, or institutional food service
- Previous supervisory, scheduling, training, or leadership experience is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of therapeutic diets, texture-modified diets, food allergies, resident preferences, food safety, infection control, and sanitation practices.
- Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to provide direction to staff in a respectful, professional, and supportive manner.
- Ability to prioritize tasks in a busy long-term care food service environment.
- Must be reliable and able to maintain consistent attendance.
- Must have a current Police Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
