Job Summary:
The John Howard Society of Nova Scotia provides transitional housing to criminalized and at-risk adult males. We have two full-time positions available, both of which will be responsible for supporting clients residing in the house, many of whom are experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, addiction recovery, or transitional life stages. The Case Worker helps residents access necessary services, develop life skills, and work toward independence and stability in a safe, supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct intake assessments for new residents to determine individual needs, goals, and risks.
- Develop personalized support plans to address housing stability, health, employment, education, or recovery goals.
- Provide one-on-one support, case management, and crisis intervention as needed.
- Link clients with community services, such as mental health counseling, addiction recovery programs, medical care, job training, and legal aid.
- Monitor client progress through regular check-ins and update care plans accordingly.
- Facilitate life skills workshops (e.g., budgeting, communication, self-care, job readiness).
- Advocate for clients with external service providers and agencies.
- Maintain accurate and confidential case notes, reports, and records in accordance with organizational and legal standards.
- Collaborate with housing staff, social workers, and outside agencies to coordinate care.
- Support a safe and respectful living environment by addressing behavioral or conflict issues professionally.
Qualifications:
- Diploma or bachelor’s degree
- Experience working with vulnerable populations such as the homeless, individuals in recovery, or those with mental health challenges.
- Strong interpersonal, crisis management, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries and handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
- Knowledge of shelter and housing systems, social services, and trauma-informed care.
- Flexibility to work evening or weekend shifts if required.
- Valid driver’s license (if transporting clients or visiting external sites).
Work Environment:
- Based in a transitional Support House - two locations.
- Combination of office-based work and direct interaction with residents.
- Will be required to work some on-call or emergency response duties.
Position Details:
- Position Type: Two Full-Time positions, Permanent
- Schedule: 80 hours bi-weekly
- Rate of Pay: $27/hour
- Leave Entitlement: To be determined and prorated based on start date
