ArcelorMittal Dofasco has created and developed the F.H. Sherman Recreation and Learning Centre to provide employees, retirees, and their families the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of recreational activities and leagues. This private recreation facility is home to gymnasiums, arenas, mini-putt course, driving range, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis courts, beach volleyball courts and playground. Everything is situated on 65-acres of beautiful grounds, nestled close to the intersection of First Road and Green Mountain, Stoney Creek.
The F.H. Sherman Recreation and Learning Centre is home to Camp Steel-Away which provides full day programming to children aged 4 – 12 years old from the beginning of July to the end of August. Each week consists of outdoor activities weather permitting (unless thunder storming/lightning) to get campers active and provide them with an opportunity to meet new friends and have an unforgettable summer experience.
Job Description: Reporting directly to the Camp Director and indirectly to the Team Lead, provides support with integration of children who require one on one support into Camp Steel-Away.
Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 support to participants who benefit from additional support to be successful in a camp environment
- To suggest/implement program and environmental adaptations to create an inclusive environment
- Maintain communication with caregivers as appropriate
- Promote appropriate behaviour using learned strategies and acquired skills Ensure the safety, enjoyment, and care of participants
- Respond to first aid situations and report all incidents, accidents, issues, and concerns to Camp Director
- Other duties as assigned

Education, Experience and Other Requirements
- Passion for working with children with disabilities
- Experience working with children with disabilities
- Ability to work outdoors and in seasonal conditions such as very hot temperatures, dry environments, humid climates, damp and/or wet climates
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Currently enrolled in post-secondary education related to children (Child & Youth Studies, ECE, Bachelor of Education) and/or Previous experience working with children. Camp and/or sport instruction experience preferred
- Standard First Aid & CPR-C
- Complete Police Vulnerable Sector Check prior to employment start date
- Be able to commit to the full term of the camp program beginning June 22nd – August 28th
