MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- Bachelor's Degree in Food Science area (or a related discipline), including laboratory analysis techniques is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience in empirical rheology for flour analysis is preferred.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Experience with job-related software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint is required.
- Capacity to learn and master new scientific techniques is required.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, are required.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team is required.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
- Assist in conducting research studies focused on cereals and grains.
- Analyze the proximate composition and the physical and techno-functional properties of grains and grain-derived foods.
- Measure enzyme activities in cereals.
- Perform the extraction and analysis of phenolic compounds from wheat.
- Maintain and troubleshoot various analytical instruments in a laboratory setting.
- Train students and visiting scholars to safely use the lab instruments as well as proper waste management and hazardous material disposal in accordance with UM Policy.
- Stay informed about updated safety procedures and relay information to staff, faculty, and students.
- Validate and assist in research activities to ensure the accuracy of results produced by students.
- Provide guidance to students in documenting and presenting their results.
- Author comprehensive research reports.
- Identify and address the needs of the lab to ensure smooth operations.
- Other duties as assigned.
