Position Summary
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Family Practice Nurse works under the direction of a physician as part of an inter-professional team. The nurse is expected to continuously seek ways to enhance service levels, addressing the needs and expectations of both patients and the clinic.
Responsibilities
Documentation
- Maintain accurate and concise documentation of all patient interactions, including office visits, telephone conversations, and communication of test results. This should be completed promptly within the computerized EMR system.
- Review all relevant lab mail and test results in the physician’s absence, as directed by the physician.
- Keep a computerized, up-to-date database tracking preventative measures for a targeted population, including mammograms, childhood immunizations, Pap smears, and fecal occult blood testing.
- Carry out other duties and projects as assigned or required.
Communication
- Triage patient phone calls and questions using effective problem-solving skills within the scope of practice.
- Listen and respond appropriately to patients and their families during interactions.
- Provide information to patients and other team members about health promotion and illness prevention.
- Work with community agencies as necessary.
- Participating in team activities
- Arrange urgent specialist referrals and appointments as instructed by the physician.
- Demonstrate openness in changes that improve quality of care.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned or required.
Procedures
- Conduct initial assessments at each patient visit to identify health needs, including measuring blood pressure, weight, and other information pertinent to the presenting issue.
- Ensure all relevant data and test results are available to the physician at the time of the visit to support medical decision-making.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by the physician or according to established protocols. This includes immunizations, injections, dressings, skin scrapings, liquid nitrogen treatments, throat swabs, suture removal, ear syringing, wound dressings, and other procedures within the nursing scope of practice.
- Assist in minor surgeries and other procedures as required.
- Use universal precautions to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Properly handle and dispose of hazardous and infectious waste according to Infection Control guidelines.
- Sterilize medical equipment as needed.
- Keep examination rooms well organized and stocked.
- Maintain an accurate log of INR results and dosing advice provided to patients.
- Be familiar with clinic equipment, including oxygen sources, ear syringes, fetal doptone, scales, autoclave, photocopier, fax machine, and multi-line phone systems.
- Carry out other duties and projects as assigned or required.

Qualifications
Professional/Education/Experience Required:
- Graduation from a recognized college or school of nursing; a baccalaureate degree is desirable.
- Current certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario, or eligibility for registration in Ontario.
- Recent clinical experience and demonstrated competence in nursing practice; medical office experience is preferred.
- EMR Proficiency - TELUS PSS Preferred

Pay: $26.00-$27.00 per hour
