Role Summary
The Senior Embryologist plays a vital leadership role in the embryology laboratory and fertility team by overseeing advanced laboratory procedures related to assisted reproductive technologies (ART). This position is responsible for performing and supervising complex embryology procedures, maintaining the highest laboratory standards, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting successful patient outcomes. The Senior Embryologist collaborates closely with physicians, nurses, junior embryologists, and clinical staff while providing mentorship, technical expertise, and quality oversight within the laboratory environment.
Role Responsibilities
Perform advanced embryology laboratory procedures related to IVF, ICSI, embryo biopsy, assisted hatching, cryopreservation, and other assisted reproductive technologies (ART)- Independently handle and assess gametes (sperm and oocytes) and embryos while ensuring optimal culture conditions and laboratory protocols
- Conduct fertilization assessments, embryo grading, embryo culture, embryo transfer preparation, and cryopreservation/thawing procedures
- Supervise, mentor, and provide training to junior embryologists, laboratory staff, and trainees
- Monitor laboratory quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) programs to ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, incubators, and environmental monitoring systems to ensure optimal laboratory performance
- Prepare, review, and maintain accurate laboratory documentation, patient records, procedure logs, and outcome reports
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention, laboratory safety standards, WHMIS regulations, and clinic policies
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and administrative staff to coordinate patient treatment cycles and optimize workflow efficiency
- Participate in laboratory audits, validations, protocol development, and continuous quality improvement initiatives
- Assist in the implementation and maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and best laboratory practices
- Support inventory management, procurement, and maintenance of laboratory supplies and equipment
- Maintain strict confidentiality and uphold ethical standards while handling sensitive patient information
- Participate in on-call rotations, weekend coverage, and schedule flexibility as required
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
Formal Education or Equivalent
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Medical Laboratory Science, Reproductive Science, or a related field- Advanced training or certification in Embryology or Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) preferred
Certifications (Preferred)
Membership or certification with professional organizations such as the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS) preferred- WHMIS and laboratory safety certifications preferred
- Certification in embryo biopsy and advanced ART techniques is considered an asset
Experience
5+ years of experience working in an embryology or IVF laboratory setting- Extensive hands-on experience with IVF, ICSI, embryo culture, cryopreservation, embryo biopsy, and related ART procedures
- Strong understanding of reproductive biology, embryology laboratory operations, and regulatory standards
- Previous experience mentoring or supervising laboratory staff is an asset
