Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Pipe Layer to join our civil construction team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in installing, aligning, and repairing underground piping systems, including stormwater, sanitary sewer, andwater lines. This role is crucial in ensuring proper installation and functionality of piping infrastructure while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Excavate trenches and prepare bedding materials for pipe installation by following all safety protocols and regulations.
- Install, repair, and maintain underground piping systems for storm drains, sanitary sewers, and water mains
- Installing various types (Ductile Iron, PVC, Concrete, HDPE, Hydro/Tel, etc.) of underground utilities to the local and project standards and specifications.
- Ensuring utilities are being installed at correct grade and elevations.
- Utilizing a variety of tools and equipment, including but not limited too; pipe lasers, cut-off saws, and other hand and gas powered tools.
- Seal joints, connect pipes, and perform leak testing as required.
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and project specifications
- Maintaining, cleaning, and caring for company tools and equipment.
- Working around heavy equipment and utilizing hand signals.
- Basic rigging and inspection of pipe.
- Maintaining good employee morale, communication, and teamwork.
- Understanding OH&S safe work practices and procedures and following them consistently.
- Providing leadership and aid in training junior employees.
- Providing feedback to supervisors and management on process improvements.
- Identifying problems and opportunities for innovation and team coordination.
- Completing other tasks as required, such as site housekeeping, assisting with trench box assembly, installing backflow preventors, and assisting with bypass pumping.
Qualifications & Experience
- 5+ years experience is required in civil utility construction; experience working with deep sewers is a must.
- Strong knowledge of and understanding in how to work with a variety of utility types and pipe material, such as pipe gradients, pipe material specifications, fitting and assembly, proper bedding, protection of other services and methods of backfill and compaction.
- Live utility locating experience.
- Expertise with trenching, shoring, trench box assembly and safe excavation procedures.
- Working knowledge of the fundamentals of installing pipe.
- Strong safety record with thorough understanding of occupational hazards and safe working procedures with live utilities and sloped terrain.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and obtain certification to do so.
- Excellent communications skills, both written and oral and strong experience completing field/site paperwork and timesheets.
- Ability to work collaboratively with everyone including customers, operation and project managers, internal crews, and subcontractors.
- Have proficient knowledge of MMCD and OH&S regulations and knowledge of construction disciplines (knowledge of materials and methods required)
- Attention to safety, quality, and production.
- Strong job planning/organizational (site and documentation), time management skills and stewardship of all equipment and tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certifications such as Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, or First Aid.
- Experience operating heavy equipment related to pipe installation.
- Knowledge of municipal or state regulations regarding underground utilities.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
