DESCRIPTION:
The Cardiovascular Technician’s main responsibilities are related to technical and monitoring support of invasive cardiac procedures (angiograms, implantable device insertion) and the coordination of in-lab activities such as specialty supplies and equipment.
Within this role the employee is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre strategy. As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Primary Procedural Support of Invasive Cardiac Procedures
- Safe and efficient operation of hemodynamic equipment for study and intervention of patients undergoing investigations and/or interventions in the Cardiac Procedure Unit.
- Safe and efficient operation of pacemaker analyzer during pacemaker insertion to evaluate lead placement and integrity.
- Perform calculations required in the evaluation of patient’s undergoing cardiac catheterization.
- Perform sterile technique, sterile set up, and scrub roles if needed during procedures and diagnostic studies.
- Prepare all appropriate documentation for the hemodynamic monitoring systems for the patient chart.
- Participate in the training of new staff
Outpatient Diagnostics
- Under the direct supervision of a physician, interrogates and evaluates parameter settings on implantable devices including as required, pacemakers, implantable defibrillators and implanted loop recorders.
Program Planning and Quality Assurance
- Participate and provide clinical expertise in the evaluation of program design, process and efficiencies.
- Participate in the development, evaluation and updating of lab protocols, manuals and procedures.
- Provide clinical expertise in the evaluation of equipment, supplies and technical aspects of in-lab use.
- Participate in quarterly program review for evaluation of patient outcomes
- Participate in hospital programs tactics as required
- Perform cross-functional duties as assigned or requested
- Performs other duties consistent with the job classification as required
- The Employee will adhere to the worker responsibilities as set out in the Occupational Health & Safety Act, hospital safety policies, and dept/unit established procedures at all times. Where possible, take corrective action to address a hazard, otherwise report the unresolved hazard, dangerous circumstance, unsafe situation to self, other co-workers or the community, to their supervisor. Should the employee suffer a workplace injury or illness, he/she will advise their supervisor; actively participate in identifying and resolving the underlying cause(s), and participates in early and safe return to work as per Workplace Safety & Insurance Act.
- Understands and is familiar with all pertinent KHSC policies and procedures including those relating to workplace conduct. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Successful completion of a 2 year diploma from a recognized Cardiovascular Technology Program
- Demonstrated ability to recognize significant cardiac arrhythmias, variations in wave morphology and electrocardiographic signs of myocardial ischemia/infarction on ECG’s.
- Demonstrated ability to sit and concentrate on a computer screen for long periods of time
- Current CPR certification
- Proficient computer and technical skills
- Equipment and Supply ordering and inventory experience
- Proficient knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology
- Good working knowledge of computers and database management.
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated initiative and professionalism.
- Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail.
- Proven ability to attend work punctually and regularly.
- Satisfactory criminal reference check required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The applicant must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position.
