JOB OVERVIEW
The Quality Inspector is responsible for ensuring that all steel structural fabrication and welding activities comply with applicable codes and standards, including CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) and AWS (American Welding Society) requirements. This role supports production by performing inspections; documentation, and quality control activities to ensure products meet customer and regulatory specifications.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Inspection (Primary Function)

Ensure calibration of inspection tools and equipment
-
Inspect raw materials and verify material certifications (MTRs)
-
Read and interpret engineering drawings, shop drawings, welding symbols and specifications
-
Verify compliance with CWB W47.1 and/or AWS welding codes and company quality standards
-
Monitor fabrication processes including cutting, forming/drilling, rolling, fitting, tacking, welding and coating to confirm adherence to engineer drawings.

Conduct visual weld inspections and ensure weld quality meets acceptable criteria.

Perform in-process and final inspections of structural steel components, weldments, and assemblies
-
Ensure proper documentation of inspection reports, non-conformance reports (NCR’s), and corrective actions.

Maintain compliance with internal Quality Management Systems (QMS) and external audit requirements

Support customer inspections and third-party audits when required.
Hands-On Floor Presence
-
Conduct inspection/audits of incoming material for acceptance into inventory reviewing MTR’s and conducting physical part inspections.

Conduct first off/last off and routine weld inspections on in-process and finished product.
-
Work with production to review and assess manufacturing processes for adherence to established policies and procedures. Make recommendations for improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Experience
-
3-7 years’ experience in steel fabrication or manufacturing
-
Experience with structural steel for bridges, buildings, or industrial projects an asset.
-
Hands-on experience with steel structures such as beams, columns, trusses and heavy assemblies.
Technical Skills
-
Strong knowledge of CWB standards (47.1) - Certified Weld Supervisor or Certified Quality Inspector Level 1 required.

Certified AWS Weld Inspector – preferred or willing to obtain

Proficiency using measuring tools (calipers, gauges, weld inspection tools)
-
Ability to interpret weld procedures and fabrication drawings and tolerances

Familiarity with NDT methods and inspection procedures

Working knowledge of ISO 9001 quality systems is an asset.

Working knowledge of manufacturing ERP systems is an asset
-
Valid Class “G” drivers license to enable travel between locations as required is an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Manufacturing/shop floor environment with exposure to noise, dust, and heavy equipment.
