Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Safety Officer to join our team. This is a newly create role. The ideal candidate will be responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe work environment by implementing safety protocols, conducting regular inspections, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations and policies.
Responsibilities
- Provide active H&S leadership by participating in and demonstrating an interest in health & safety, and setting a good example for workers through attitude, conduct, and compliance with safety requirements.
- Work closely with forepersons and project managers to implement and monitor the company’s health and safety policies and procedures on jobsites.
- Travel to jobsites and conduct regular site inspections, safety audits, and risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions, and prepare detailed reports with recommendations.
- Lead Joint Health & Safety Committee and collaborate with management and worker representatives.
- Support site supervisors and project managers in developing and maintaining site-specific safety plans.
- Ensure proper use of PPE and adherence to safe work procedures among employees and subcontractors.
- Lead and participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and job hazard analyses (JHAs).
- Maintain accurate safety records, including training certifications, inspection logs, and incident reports.
- Stay up to date with relevant safety legislation and industry best practices (e.g., OHSA, CSA standards, WSIB requirements).
- Facilitate or coordinate safety training sessions for workers and supervisors.
- Act as a key point of contact for all health and safety-related matters on-site.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3–5 years of health and safety experience in a construction environment, preferably in the electrical or ICI sector.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
- Must be able to obtain Level 2 (Secret) Clearance
- Certification in health and safety (e.g., CRSP, CHSO, NCSO, or equivalent) is an asset.
- Sound knowledge of construction safety regulations, electrical safety standards, and risk mitigation practices.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient with safety management systems.
