Job Summary: The Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Specialist supports FIO Automotive Canada’s commitment to a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible workplace by strengthening compliance, reducing risk, and advancing a strong safety culture across the organization.
Area of Accountability: The HSE Specialist is accountable for the development, implementation, compliance, and continuous improvement of Health, Safety, and Environmental programs, including legislative and ISO requirements, audits, incident management, and corrective actions aligned with business objectives.
Major Responsibilities:
Health, Safety and Environmental Management
- Develop, implement, and maintain, the Health and Safety and Environmental Management Systems in accordance with ISO 45001 and 14001 requirements.
- Ensure compliance with applicable municipal, provincial, and federal health, safety and environmental legislation. Develop and maintain HDSE policies, procedures, safe work practices and related documentation.
- Conduct HSE audits, inspections, risk assessments, and investigations; ensure corrective actions are implemented and tracked to completion.
- Maintain incident, injury, near miss and environmental reporting, support root cause analysis and continuous improvement.
- Manage environmental permits, approvals, monitoring programs, and reporting requirements
- Support WSIB claims management and early and safe return-to-work programs.
- Lead or support the Joint Health, Safety & Environmental Committee (JHSEC).
Programs, Training & Continuous Improvement
- Develop and support HSE training programs for all levels of the organization.
- Maintain contractor safety, WHMIS, emergency preparedness, and environmental compliance programs.
- Collaborate with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, and Kaizen teams on workplace design, equipment safety, ergonomics, and 5S.
- Prepare and present HSE KPIs, audit results, and compliance reports.
- Support corporate, regional, and customer HSE initiatives and working groups.
- Promote environmental stewardship, sustainability initiatives, and employee engagement.
General Expectations
- Recognize and escalate abnormal conditions related to safety, environment, quality, or equipment.
- Follow standard work, HSE procedures, and PPE requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Perform duties in a manner that protects the safety and environmental performance of all employees.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Post‑secondary degree or diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Studies, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field.
- An equivalent combination of education, professional certifications, and experience will be considered.
- Minimum 3-5 years of progressive experience in Health, Safety and/or Environmental roles within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Demonstrated experience with integrated HSE management systems, regulatory compliance, audits, incident investigations, and corrective action management.
- ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems strongly preferred.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety and environmental legislation
- Experience with risk assessment, incident investigation and corrective action management.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Proficient with standard computer and reporting tools.
- Ability to travel to other company locations as required.
Physical & Environmental Working Conditions:
This role is based in a manufacturing environment and requires regular presence on the production floor. The HSE Specialist may be exposed to noise, moving equipment, industrial processes, and environmental conditions typical of a manufacturing facility. The role may involve walking, standing, climbing stairs or ladders, and occasional lifting. Required personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when on the production floor.
