What we're looking for
Upside Robotics is looking for a Senior Teleoperator / Robot Fleet Manager to pilot and maintain our autonomous fleet. Piloting the fleet feels a lot like playing an RTS or FPS: you're watching multiple units at once, reacting fast, and deciding where attention is needed most. Unlike a game, when something breaks (say, a robot fails to recharge) you diagnose it and fix it. This role is for someone who genuinely loves gaming and robotics, has sharp multitasking instincts, and enough technical curiosity to dig into logs and code when a robot misbehaves.
Responsibilities
- Actively monitor and control multiple robots in the field, switching attention fluidly between units and triaging issues in real time.
- Take manual control for navigation edge cases, obstacle avoidance, or recovery maneuvers.
- Diagnose and fix operational issues (failed recharge, lost localization, stuck robots), remotely or by coordinating a field visit.
- Read logs, telemetry, and error outputs; work with ROS-based control systems and basic scripting to investigate issues.
- Report bugs to engineering with actionable technical detail, and maintain playbooks for common failure modes.
Qualifications
- Experience:
- Genuine love of video gaming, ideally in games requiring fast reflexes and multitasking (RTS, FPS, MOBA, etc.).
- Real interest in robotics and agriculture.
- Comfortable reading code and logs and troubleshooting technical systems.
- Proven ability to juggle multiple priorities and stay calm when several things break at once.
- Communication: A "low ego, high clarity" communicator. Able to document and escalate technical issues.
- Technical Literacy: While you don't need to be a roboticist, you must be comfortable enough with software.
- Resilience: Experience working in the "chaos" of a seed-stage company; you thrive when there is no playbook.
- Location: Ability to work from our headquarters in Waterloo, Ontario, but the job can be mostly remote (work from home with flexible schedule)
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with ROS or similar robot control frameworks.
- Prior experience writing or reading code.
- AgTech background or familiarity with corn farming.
- Prior teleoperation, drone piloting, or remote vehicle operation experience.
Benefits
- Salary: $20/hour.
- Location: Remote.
- Vacation: Unlimited. We trust our team to manage their own time and results; we don't track days off.
- Impact: The opportunity to work on a product that has a direct, measurable impact on climate change and global food security.
About Us
Upside Robotics is on a mission to make farming more sustainable and efficient using "physical AI." We build autonomous, solar-powered robots that navigate cornfields to apply fertilizer with surgical precision—think of them as "Roombas for cornfields."
By delivering nutrients directly to the root exactly when the plant needs them, we help farmers reduce fertilizer waste by up to 70%, cut costs by $150 per acre, and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. With a $7.5M USD Seed round recently closed and a waitlist of over 200 farms, we are scaling our fleet across Ontario and into the U.S. Corn Belt. We are an "agronomy-first" company that uses robotics as a tool to solve one of the world's biggest environmental and economic challenges.
